Buick, Ford, Cadillac, and Volvo all have models produced in China and sold in the U.S.

It's the pass thoughs that will hurt them. They have been avoiding the tariffs through pass throughs. China can't avoid the tariff now.
So the bogeyman won't just keep going through Mexico?

I'll withhold judgement to see if that is the case, but why not just single them out and maybe add SOKO.

It appears that the strategy is to force countries to show that they are not passing through Chinese steel and aluminum. We already have good control on Mexico and Canada due to our close and long time relationship so it makes sense to give them exemptions right now (plus NAFTA re-negotiations).

The remaining countries will have to show they are not passing through Chinese steel and aluminum. When the do, they get exemptions.

That's a MUCH easier strategy than trying to track down every offending country and singling them out. Make them do the work.

Thanks. Didn't really think they were doing so in any volume. Any idea what that amounts to in a year?

Yeah I'm being a lazy arse. I guess I can google.

yea, I'm not sure about the $ amount. I just read something the other day about a Buick SUV, the Focus, and i think the CT6 Hybrid being made over there.

No, the boogeyman that controls North Korea won't keep going through Mexico. However apparently we are giving Mexico (and Canada) the benefit of the doubt by giving them exemptions up front.

Do you see the geopolitical strategy? I think I do.

I still think it's dangerous to toy with the EU, especially for the agriculture sector.

They will respond for sure, and the economic benefit felt from U.S. steel producers will be minimal. They aren't going to ramp up production/hiring when they know these tariffs will be short lived. Companies typically invest for the long-term.

What does that mean, exactly? And what tariffs have they been avoiding?

Hopefully this real life example answers your questions:

Chinese billionaire 'hid $2bn aluminium pile in Mexican desert and then sold it across the border to America to avoid costly tariffs', claim US rivals

so the "pass throughs" are NAFTA countries?

what was all that about us "forcing countries to show that they are not passing through Chinese steel and aluminum" when the exemptions are for Canada/Mexico, then?

and do we have any idea of the magnitude of this behavior? these tariffs impose some pretty costly measures worldwide if this is their actual target. this theory of yours seems pretty weak man, maybe even weaker than the national security argument has been shown to be

How would these current tariffs prevent this, since mexico is exempted? Just skimmed the article, but I imagine this guy was making his aluminum appear to come from mexico.

It's pretty funny..

We don't import huge amounts of steel from China

Yes we do, you just didn't know it because it comes through Mexico. That's all gonna change now

But Mexico is exempt

Yeah, but..
