This is stupid. First time I disagree with Trump.

Trump’s response to the WTO would be “OK, I give in. Mexico and Canada get tariffs too.”

No. Germany accounts for 3%, and I’m sure there are others in the in 22% that are no in the top 10 import nations. But beyond EU South Korea (10%), Japan (5%); Taiwan (4%) are also in the top 10.

Look for POTUS Trump to drop the tariffs from countries that produce steel and aluminum directly except China.

China is being punished.

The rest of the world can get rewarded if they are not passing through Chinese steel and aluminum and receive exemptions.

Mexico and Canada who currently have the exemptions will have the tariffs apply if they continue the pass through practice.

I'm pleased that he's getting worn down from "significant deadweight loss" to "mostly pointless signaling"

Chinese steel already falls under U.S. duties tariffs and import controls. they will be less affected by this

But why?
One of the smartest political plays I've seen him make. The "tariffs" will be full of holes and will exempt pretty much every one of our major steel and aluminum trading partners...but he got his photo op with the guys in hardhats.

I tip my hat. Sincerely.

It's the pass thoughs that will hurt them. They have been avoiding the tariffs through pass throughs. China can't avoid the tariff now.

Donald J. Trump ?
@realDonaldTrump

China has been asked to develop a plan for the year of a One Billion Dollar reduction in their massive Trade Deficit with the United States. Our relationship with China has been a very good one, and we look forward to seeing what ideas they come back with. We must act soon!

Elon Musk ?
@elonmusk

Do you think the US & China should have equal & fair rules for cars? Meaning, same import duties, ownership constraints & other factors.

Elon Musk ?
@elonmusk
Replying to @elonmusk @realDonaldTrump

For example, an American car going to China pays 25% import duty, but a Chinese car coming to the US only pays 2.5%, a tenfold difference

Elon Musk ?
@elonmusk

I am against import duties in general, but the current rules make things very difficult. It’s like competing in an Olympic race wearing lead shoes.

I'll withhold judgement to see if that is the case, but why not just single them out and maybe add SOKO.

I think that's a misquote. $1B a year doesn't do shite against our deficit with China. I think it's $100B.

And this is a strange claim. How many Chinese cars are sold in the U.S.? Honest question. I don't know anyone with a Chinese car. I believe some Chinese conglomerate bought a controlling stake in Volvo some years ago, but I assume the cars are still mostly manufactured in Europe.
