What’s your lineup when Smith returns? I think you have to give Hughes a couple games in SEC play to see how he does at the plate. If he can at least hold his own I think you go with:

Duplantis (RF)
Smith (3B)
Watson (CF)
Beau (LF)
Bain (DH)
Feduccia (C)
Bryce (1B)
Broussard (2B)
Hughes (SS)

I think you give Cabrera another crack at it and hopefully move him to LF and let Beau DH.

I feel like the best lineup has Slaughter at 1B....but I can't justify that right now with him struggling.

I know this is a discussion board and all but this is really a question that can’t be answered until he comes back. Is Slaughter in a tear and gets his average up over 300? Does Hughes struggle in the SEC and his BA plummets? Maybe Bryce is struggling at first and you can play someone there or we don’t have a DH hitting very well at that time and that’s an opening. These are things that we just don’t know and we still don’t have a definite date on when Smith is coming back.

In all honesty these threads are useless. We’ll play a couple of SEC weekends before Josh is back and it will work itself out in those weekends. I think the only guys that have locked up spots for sure are:

Watson
Duplantiss
Smith
Hunter

The rest of the INF will consist of Hughes, Bain, Broussard, Bryce and Slaughter

Then Webre, Beau, Cabrera will all battle for the spot in the outfield

If i were a betting man I would say right now PM is looking at

C-Hunter
1B- Slaughter
2B- Broussard
SS- Hughes
3B- Josh
LF- Beau
CF- Watson
RF- Duplantis
DH- Bryce

I also think he’ll rotate in Webre and Cabrera and use Bain as a PH.

With that said I have full faith that PM know 100x more than me and he’ll get it right. He always does.

I don't see Bain's success continuing into conference. I get its a good story, but he's not a natural hitter. Good pinch hitter though. Conference lineup shakes like this:

Smith 3B
Watson CF
Duplantis RF
Bryce DH
Feduccia C
Beau LF
Broussard 2B
Slaughter 1B
Hughes SS

Broussard (2B)
Duplantis (RF or LF if Cabrera or Beau is playing due to match up)
Smith (3B)
Watson (CF)
Feduccia (C)
Hughes (SS)
First base - Bryce at DH or depending on lefty righty match-up at first base. If Slaughter is better against lefties. He hits And plays the field.
Outfield - Beau and Cabrera platoon depending on matchups.

I want my best defensive player in the outfield depending on my pitcher. Does he throw a lot of fly ball outs. It’s the same on the infield. You have to play match-ups

Slaughter and Bain won’t be in the starting lineup when Smith comes back. Bain will probably be a pinch hitter a good bit though

i'm not sold on hughs bat. sure, slaughter is struggling but I think he's the better option over hughs. I know he's got a good BA right now but I really don't think that'll last plus he doesn't seem to do well with RISP
