8. For United Methodist congregations to advocate at the local and national level for laws that prevent or reduce gun violence. Some of those measures include:

• Universal background checks on all gun purchases

• Ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty

• Ensuring all guns are sold through licensed gun retailers

• Prohibiting all individuals convicted of violent crimes from purchasing a gun for a fixed time period

• Prohibiting all individuals under restraining order due to threat of violence from purchasing a gun

• Prohibiting persons with serious mental illness, who pose a danger to themselves and their communities, from purchasing a gun

• Ensuring greater access to services for those suffering from mental illness

• Establishing a minimum age of 21 years for a gun purchase or possession

• Banning large-capacity ammunition magazines and weapons designed to fire multiple rounds each time the trigger is pulled

• Promoting new technologies to aid law-enforcement agencies to trace crime guns and promote public safety.

They need to stay in their lane and learn their role.

And people wonder why some churches are losing membership.

If I am in church on Sunday morning, I better be hearing about God and Jesus, not a UN arms trade treaty.

They support women and queer preachers, They support queer marriage.

even before these drastic departures of the faith they supported sprinkling for baptism and have never even believed baptism was necessary for salvation.

It isn't like they were ever Christian Church anyway.

So, no hunting under the age of 21? Deer everywhere will support this.

Our church is contemplating arming one or two of our ushers. We have an ex-Marine and an ex-gunny sgt from the Army who have volunteered to carry during the services.

It sucks, because UMC is following other mainline churches in becoming vehicles for social justice nutjobs.

It's more than gun violence. UMC basically says employment is a human right and the government's responsibility if the economy can't provide full employment. Some others I'm forgetting as well.

Meanwhile, there is an ongoing "way forward" conference intended to avoid schism over the gay issue. I don't care about the gay debate in general, I care about the Church determining the USG's role in social issues. I want to see a schism on that.

Unfortunately, it's set up to where one side is going to be the loving, inclusive side and the other side will just hate gays.

I don't believe Jesus taught against the possession of spears, swords or regulations around them. This is the area of civics.

Try as they might, the very essence of Protestantism is sticking to that which is described in the Book and only described in the Book. These power-mongers at the head of church organizations espouse their platitudes but there is no official expectation for us as congregants to G.A.S. unless its in the Bible.

Our church has a plain-clothes cop sitting in every service among the congregation.

As far as what many urban/suburban pastors are messaging these days, it's tied to the word and WWJD, and that certainly clashes with many around here. It's not just the Methodist church.

I'm glad that I left the church of my youth. I love my non-denominational church.

Anybody want to take a guess on how many heads would explode if we means-tested any other Constitutional right?

I live just outside a town with a fairly high profile Church of Christ College (at least for Arkansas standards) and they are very conservative.

I always thought the Methodist Churches around here were very liberal, kind of in response to the conservatism of the C of C. Not so apparently.

In the immortal words of Don Williams:

I don't believe that heaven waits, for only those who congregate.

I don't find a church that speaks to me these days. I was raised Baptist, but I disagree with a lot of the church doctrine, so I don't go. Methodist is leftist to me. Church of Christ is very clannish, at least around here, but are probably closer to my politics. The antics in Pentecostal churches creep me out, and the non-denominational churches are too new age, try too hard to be edgy, and tend to preach the prosperity gospel, in my experience.

I'll just keep my faith, and leave religion to the religious.

The UMC, The PCUSA, the ELCA, the UCC, the ABC, the Episcopalians, and the rest of the WCC have been run by the antichrist for some time now....

The Methodist church - and the rest of that list - is where you go if you want to have a church membership card for social purposes without dealing with that Jesus fellow.

The best policy for churches to have to reduce violence is to find new ways to reach people. They need to go out and get the gospel to people. That needs to be their #1 policy.

If churches would only start being thermostats again instead of thermometers, this wouldn't be necessary. Churches need to buck up instead of placating their congregations.
