Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel This guy looks and sounds like a buffoon. Can't imagine the level of deputies there.

The sheriff just said the office was posted up outside for 4 mins. The officer resigned.

Not only does this guy need to live with the consequences of his inaction, but he also has to deal with the fact that 15 y/o Asian ROTC cadet had bigger balls than he does. I almost feel bad for this poor schmuck.

About 25 or 30 years ago, a bank was robbed out on Michoud Blvd around lunchtime. The branch was crowded with employees and customers. There were probably between 40 and 50 people inside. It was a takeover style robbery, so the assailants came in with guns drawn and screaming. The manager bailed out as soon as it started. Other employees managed the situation and got the robbers out of there pretty quickly with nobody being harmed. It was a better than expected result, because it initially looked like it was going to get ugly.

About 45 minutes later, the manager returns. NOPD and the FBI had already been interviewing the witnesses and the manager's absence was conspicuous. His explanation was that he saw two of the robbers taking rifles or shotguns out of the trunk of a car in the parking lot, so he left the branch to get to a pay phone to call police. There was a Shell station across the street with a bank of pay phones within sight of the door, but he went somewhere else. Obviously, there are silent and audible alarms in the branch, but he went somewhere else. If he had set off the siren as soon as he saw the guys in the parking lot, they probably would have hauled arse if they had any sense.

It looked really bad for him. I don't think he was involved, he just panicked. This guy had been a manager of various branches for about 20 years, so it wasn't like he was some kid that didn't have sufficient training. I don't know what happened to him, but I never saw him again.

But people on this board want to arm teachers and think they'll do better.

One thing that should be mentioned in the era where police shoot first and ask questions later.

In the last 5-7-10 years, if you asked a police officer what his or her number one job was, they would say,"To go home at the end of my shift." "Protecting and serving" has fallen to a distant 2nd.

This guy went home at the end of his shift.

Was this guy a legit police offer working in the school, or was he just a regular security guard.

At my high school, we had 3 security guards working at our school. One was a legit former police officer who had a career working in the police force. The other 2 were nothing more than glorified mall cops. I doubt they even had guns.

Chances are, this guy froze up realizing that this is not what he was signing up for. 99% of the time, these guys job consists of nothing more than walking around and making sure nobody is skipping class, or breaking up school fights.

I feel for him. On one hand, I'm angry at him that he had a chance to save at least some of those 17 lives that were lost. On the other, I realize it's a bit much to ask someone to go in there and be James Bond.

There are several pass/fail criteria in my mind for an LEO. I won't tolerate lying, whining or cowardice. He should've been fired on the spot.

They said the entire shooting lasted 3 minutes, the shooting could have stopped by the time he got there, if he didn't hear gunshots he may have assumed it was hoax, many questions need to be answered.
Every time a cop kills a civilian and is immediately found guilty by the anti-cop regime, those on this board are quick to point out that nobody here was actually there, we don't know what happened, wait for the details to come out, shouldn't this guy receive the same restraint in judgment?

First off, none of this should have been brought public. I think it really, really sucks the school officer didn't go in there, and I definitely think he should have been asked to resign or be fired. The Sheriff though should not have brought those details to light publicly like he did. I understand it would have come to light somewhat with kids and teacher interviews, but nothing like it is now. That dude and his family are going to probably start getting death threats now, heaven forbid what his kids are gonna have to go through, or possibly grand kids.

The Sheriff has made several second hand statements and even admitted that, for instance making a comment that he heard someone else say but doesn't know if that's true or not. What a horrible job at leadership at the Sheriff's office there. You go back and look at Dallas police chief after an awful disaster, and other law enforcement agency heads during things like this, this guy, the Sheriff, is a freaking joke.

Another reason the idea of arming all teachers would only work in a perfect world. Assuming that everyone who is armed will actually use their gun for the reason they have it.

Scot Peterson (isn't that also the name of some dude who killed his wife and it became a famous case?) is a pussy. While kids were targeted like fish in a barrel, his natural instinct was to stay away... Although his job was to be interactive if situations like that came up. As for as I am concerned, he has blood on his hands as well.

Surely that school had more than one officer on campus at all times?

Jeez, maybe I'm late. But I just read somewhere that they said the shooting lasted for only 5 minutes. That is crazy to me. In my head that seems like a short amount of time, but in reality when dealing with a crazed gunman, that probably feels like it lasted over an hour.

I really get the feeling that that animal didnt truly realize what he was doing. He said he wanted to be a school shooter, so he thought "what the heck, why not make today the day. I wonder what would happen" Its like he was just doing things without recognizing this was real life, and not his dreams or a video game. Likely after hearing the screams and seeing the bodies drop everywhere, its like he realized "o crap Im killing people right now, the cops are gonna kill me". So he literally dropped his things and ran out the door. The very fact that he just casually walked down the street to Subway and Mcdonalds shows me he didnt fully think things through. He didnt off himself like some of the other psycopaths do. And He really made no attempts to make an escape at all.

All this just makes me sick to my freaking stomach.

I’ve said it before and no one payed attention. Most of your SROs are hired for that position because they just need a warm body there. Many places require a college degree to be an SRO because the school uses them a substitute teacher. It’s more like having someone with a degree to be on school staff that also has a gun and is commissioned.

It’s also a place for people on light duty, near retirement, etc.

You won’t find and SRO many places that’s a fit, young, ready to meet danger head on guys standing around guarding kids. Even though it’s a great place to meet all the hot single moms, it’s not a position of priority for most departments

If you are going to have an armed guard, get one with a desire to help should it be needed.
