Let's be real here, do we really expect the government to investigate every oddball comment on the internet?

It's not possible or practical.

They should make some attempt for extremely specific comments such as that.

That's why they have field offices all over the U.S.

My thoughts too - but in this case it looks like they did follow up on the comment.

They did investigate it. The kid had been expelled from school for making threats.

They seemed interested enough to interview the person who contacted them the very next day.....

What happened from there?

The FBI can call the local PD if they don’t have the resources. The local PD can simply knock on the door and ask questions at a minimum. Hell, there is probably enough probable cause in this case to have acquired a warrant and search the dudes house.

If they did, half the rant would be in trouble...

We now know the dude was a problem at his school. He was banned from bringing a backpack to school after making threats. Then he was eventually expelled and banned from campus. So even the slightest follow up with local authorities should have set off alarm bells. I'm very libertarian but at some point you forfeit the right to be left alone by the authorities.

I just find it ironic to the point of terrifying on so many levels that businesses like YouTube, Twitter and Apple find entities like Prager U and Drudge Report subversive to the point of censoring them - but when people are actually advocating violence and displaying dangerous mental illness on these platforms they don't bother to take any action.

Examples: This current shooter, BLM people advocating killing cops or white people on Twitter and Facebook (example the Shooter of police in BRLA), the San Bernadino Terrorist Couple who were dead but Apple would not voluntarily hack the phone.

Yes, when it involves some nut going off about shooting up a school. This event could have been stopped.

They put someone in jail for 6 years for making an obvious fake threat in a game. Another is facing 8 years for a sarcastic threat on facebook about a game. Neither of these kids have the history of the shooter. Why should they be imprisoned but not someone whose history represents an obvious threat? If the government wanted to imprison people like the shooter, they have the ability. Wasting resources on jokes while letting actual threats go free is the problem.

Youtube links:

10 YEARS OF JAIL OVER RUNESCAPE!

He Spent 6 YEARS In Jail for a Comment on RuneScape!

Facing 8 Years In Jail Over League of Legends Comment

2nd video is 30 mins, but the others are under 4 mins. First two are the same case.

I love that the most reasonable and accurate comment in the thread also received the most downvotes.

This is what makes PT great.

So the whole "See something, say something" and "Government will protect us" is total and completely bullshite?

Great, more reason I will not relinquish my weapons to them.

How many people claim they are going to shoot up schools specifically on the internet? I will guarantee you everyone who states that needs to be investigated.

You mean the government down not have a program that can track FB, instrgram and social media sights for suspects who are reported by a third party and who have pics of guns and masks?

Half the job has been done for the FBI, you had a "see something say something" moment. That should have put this guy into a heighten level on a computer level, where a program or two can track, record, and report warning signs for an analyst to make a call.

With all the info tech out there, FBI has nothing?

They did follow up with the YouTube. Couldn't they have put some sort of note or flag on his background for the background check to buy a firearm?
