They are getting the buses off of Government St. Damn...Doesn't anyone actually read about projects before spouting off opinions about it

They have said that they plan to, but no plan has been introduced as of yet. Until I see a real plan to get those busses off of that road, I cannot in any way support this project.

Hopefully the buses will be made illegal

The buses are used by poor people to get to nicer neighborhoods and burglarize them

Yes but they won't be carrying any people.

to be fair, baton Rouge is horrible to negotiate. There are very few arteries through the city and fewer back streets.

Houston and Austin traffic sucks, but both have multiple other roads you can take.
I learned all the short cuts in BR and there are few.
Taking away a major one without fixing anything else first is a bad idea.

I used to be on the Bernard Terrace civic association. This plan was being mentioned in 2007.

Or maybe there are unique circumstances that make this location less suitable than places like Magazine which lie in the middle of a very comprehensive road grid resplendent with alternative parallel routes. There is only one road that can take one from downtown to Jefferson Highway, one (Florida can get one to Lobdell). This isn’t the same situation, so it will require some extra planning to make it work.

So let me get this straight. The inside lanes on both sides are held up due to people wanting to turn left. So the answer is to create one middle lane to take those people out of the moving traffic. You still have the same problem. One lane of traffic moving in both directions and only one center where people will be crowded waiting to make the turn because there’s only one lane.

I’m just glad I don’t live on that side of town. Enjoy your traffic.

Could they extend Jefferson to Florida?

It's a good plan. The center turn lane will be a big help. But Jefferson needs to be extended to Florida somehow.

Does anyone realize that toll roads still cost state money? A state that has no money cant afford to build a toll road. They are not 100% private investments.

Nope, there are subdivisions there and a new one being built. That would have made the most sense, but blame that on the city planners 50 years ago when Waverly was built.

I get the argument for how North Blvd dead ends at Foster. Again, lack of planning by building the community college there. But if you needed to get to Jefferson, couldnt you just take Florida to Lobdell? There is plenty of space on that four lane divided street, and the section from Goodwood to Jefferson could also be expanded.

Personally, I am excited about this. I don't want to see any of you negative nancies in the new developments, bars, restaurants, etc. that pop up because the neighborhood is more walkable and enjoyable. And I doubt any of the Capital Heights/Webb Park/Mid City people want you to come from ascension or livingtston anyway.

These are some of the highway projects I'd like to see:

1. New 4-6 lane Southern/Western bypass connecting I-10 at Gonzales to I-10 and US190 in WBR with a 6 lane wide toll bridge at Plaquemine Point near Dow.

2. New 4 lane "Livingston/Ascension Parkway" between Gonzales and northern Livingston, connecting Ascension Parish to I-12 east of Walker.

3. New 4 lane bridge over Amite at Hooper Road

4. New 2 lane bridge over Amite at S. Harrell's Ferry Road

5. New 4 lane freeway spur around Plaquemine connecting to new toll bridge.

6. New 4 lane LA415/LA1 Connector in Port Allen with bridge over Intercoastal

There are actually a couple of good places for a future new airport in this scenario, but I'd be partial to one between Baton Rouge and Hammond along I-12.

The second best place for a bridge would be south of Plaquemine near Bayou Goula. Plaquemine Point is still the best spot.

Notice they won't be changing the configuration of Government Street between Jefferson and Foster.

Im sure that change was made once the study showed the potential traffic numbers for that stretch. Shouldn't be too big of a deal, because even if they don't add the bike lanes or road calming features to start, there seems to be space to add them in the future to address that small area.

They could re-align the intersection to connect it to Cloud, but it would take some serious work and would threaten Fleur des lis Pizza

Honestly though we have too many damn people on BR roads every day. At this point the suburbs have grown so much, and will keep doing so, that another form of transportation needs to be considered. A monorail or something. I came here when Katrina hit so I admit I am part of the problem. I'll be gone as soon as I can. Real estate in BR is too expensive for what you're getting.

it does not help that the options to live in Ascension or Central and commute got flooded.

When the shrink Government Street expect Capital Heights traffic as well as Claycut/Goodwood traffic to increase. Probably the street on the South side of Webb Park/Broussard corridor too will see more cars.

People coming from Jefferson Hwy., Broadmoor/Sherwood, and College Drive will be working their way Downtown somehow. They all aren't going to jump over to North Blvd.

Look on maps from the turn of the 19th. century and the government Street/Jefferson Hwy. has been there. It's a natural flow for EBR traffic heading to Downtown/Mid City from the East and Southeast.
