It's actually fairly low, around 6.5% of all who actually reached the summit. Of course, it's lower than that for everyone who tried, around 1.5%. The vast majority do just fine.
The real problem is how much time and money it takes. You can plan on taking at least 3 months off work and paying $75k and up. And that doesn't include the other climbs you make to get ready for Everest. For example, Denali, probably multiple Rainier ascents, a couple of others at altitude.

Hell no. You have to be a moronic egomaniac to want to spent that kind of money to do something so pointlessly dangerous.

WHY??
It's cold and it's high and I have a pretty awesome life so I'd like to stay alive as long as I can

Not to mention the time to train. Friend of mine thought he was in good shape. Went with 3 others. He failed miserably.
Since then he has spent the last 2 years becoming a long distance runner. 50k's are his norm now and he's hoping to go again.
Typical summits at Denali require 3 weeks of time off depending on the weather.
And there aren't people there to drag your shite up. You haul a sled with a ton of gear to base camp and I think 1 more camp.

The altitude would be doubly tough on we LA flatlanders who have lived the majority of our lives at 100’ AMSL or less.

You have no idea the high that you get from achieving a summit.
That said, the mountains in the NW are good enough for me. I can easily die here without spending serious money.

Let me do Denali first

Did it twice just because I could

No interest. Hard pass.

I would not. Not only do I not like cold and walking up steep grades, I like all my body parts. Everybody that goes loses at least a few fingers, toes, nose, etc. No thanks.

Females like yourself certainly couldn’t do it
Damn right I couldn't nor would I want to. It's just fascinating to me that some people put themselves out there like that.
2 of the women on that expedition were two idiots who had no business up there. One was was an idiotic rich bitch (Sandy Pittman) who had the Sherpa pulling her arse up the mountain instead of maintaining and establishing the lines that everyone needed to climb. She should have died up there but they saved her.

Hell no I know my limits....I'd have tried it at 20 maybe.

How hard was that? Did you go with a company?
I have started to have a good bit of interest of climbing.
I would never do Everest or anything like that because one I couldn't afford it, two couldn't justify it with a family, and three I'm probably not man enough. If some tragedy struck and I lost my entire family I'd probably give it a go though, suicide by mountain or something.
I'd like to do just the trek to base camp though, even that looks like it would be a really cool experience.

Listen to the Joe Rogan podcast with Jeff Evans. Interesting perspective of someone who did it because someone needed him to do it.
I listened to motivational speaker who failed once and summited another time. It didn’t seem like it was done for some spiritual awakening or personal journey. It was more “look at me!!”

You can be cautious and do it right and die? Nope.
Sherpas die all the time. No thanks.
No “snow naps” for me. (Stolen from Joe Rogan podcast).

Read Bear Grylls account of climbing Everest. Said it was the most difficult thing he had ever done and keep in mind he had just successfully gone through SAS qualification before that.
Fun to think about but no way.

I would freak the hell out crossing those lashed together ladders they use to cross the crevasses in the icefall.
