You guys realize the word "shithole" isn't what people are upset about, right?

Yeah, some people are offended by the word, and focusing on that word in the news gets everyone's attention, but calling a shithole a shithole isn't the problem. The people who live in the shitholes would probably agree that they live in a shithole.
The upsetting thing is that Trump very clearly insinuated that people who live in shithole countries are less worthy of becoming Americans than people from other places. Even if you strip away the possible (likely?) racist angle, you are still left with what is clearly class-based discrimination, and IMO that isn't the way the land of opportunity should present itself to the world.
Feel free to disagree.

Even if he did say it, that is your twisted interpretation, not mine.

Nope, I agree. Good summary of why I have issue with it.

Are you ready to have this discussion?
Think you can do it without the word "racist (!!!!!) ?

I disagree.
I don't want lower class people coming here. It's simply a supply and demand issue. We have waaaaay too many lower class people here now.

God forbid he wants successful, educated immigrants who can actually contribute instead of leeches.
How racist!
How racist!

I'd say 50% of them don't realize that
50% of them do realize that but know that it's both easier and more fun to argue against the weaker proposition (or just spam MELT)

I think less desirable is a better term.
And his typical lack of decorum aside, I don't understand why wanting to "recruit" the best and brightest is a negative on immigration policy.

I agree. Why are only white Western nations being forced to take in people from those shitholes?

Like some fricking socialist Norwegians?

quote:I don't think that's the clear insinuation at all. I think the insinuation is that people from underdeveloped countries probably don't have marketable skills that will benefit America. The result is that these people are more likely to become a drag on American resources. So Trump is looking out for America more than he is looking out for immigrants from other countries. Is that so wrong?

quote:I think this is the real implication of what he allegedly said. As we've seen in recent years or decades, some factions of the political class are encouraging immigration from populations that have no intention of assimilating into the American culture, and are far more likely to participate in the welfare system. That is a problem and I think most people recognize that. These types of immigrants aren't additive, they're just an additional burden on taxpayers and people have had enough of that shite.
people from shithole countries bring shithole culture with them.
ETA: I don't know if this is a recent phenomenon or if it's always been this way, but my view of the immigrant experience from the early 20th century is of waves of people coming to the U.S. for an opportunity for a better life. They wanted a job, or the chance to start their own business, or to escape from oppression. It seems like recent waves of immigrants contain a higher proportion of people looking to get on the dole and/or assuage the white guilt of leftists. No thanks.

We have a right to determine who we allow into this country. With 1/2 of current immigrants sucking off the government’s tit, why would we allow more people in with no skills and no ability to contribute? We want the best and brightest, not more voting slaves for the slum lords
Posted on 1/12/18 at 12:37 pm to Korkstand
Wrong. He's talking about wanting the "best" people coming to this country to make it better instead of being a sanctuary for everyone who has hardship in the world. Those places he was referring to are not providing people who would improve the country, by and large.

Perhaps.
But lets suppose he called them sh!tholes and followed with "but they are still welcome in America."
How different would the storm be?
