WASHINGTON, D.C. -- American football, under attack from critics in recent years, has lost some of its popularity but is still the champion of U.S. spectator sports -- picked by 37% of U.S. adults as their favorite sport to watch. The next-most-popular sports are basketball, favored by 11%, and baseball, favored by 9%.

The 9% of Americans who mention baseball as their favorite sport to watch is the lowest percentage for the sport since Gallup first asked the question in 1937. Americans named baseball as the most popular sport in 1948 and 1960, but football claimed the top spot in 1972 and has been the public's favorite ever since.

Soccer now nearly matches baseball's popularity. Seven percent say it is their favorite sport to watch, the highest that sport has registered to date. Only once before have at least 7% of Americans named a sport other than football, basketball or baseball as their favorite -- and that was auto racing in 1997. (Auto racing is now down to 2% of mentions.)

Though football retains its top spot, its popularity has slipped since peaking at 43% in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, it dipped slightly to 41% and dropped again to 39% in 2013 -- the last time the question was asked before the December 2017 poll and its 37% reading.

Looks like it's really the 55+ age group that's holding soccer back (1% said it's their favorite sport).

That percentage should grow over the next 10-20 years.

stop it with polls

you have no clue who was asked, where they asked, etc

Polls are as reliable as Cam Newton on a game winning drive.

Not sure why you would think that. Soccer really is a great sport.

Soccer is a cheap sport to get into. All you need is a ball and a street, field, etc. I'd imagine that is a big factor in why it is so big around the world.

Bingo.
But for some reason it's extremely expensive to play in America

If you break it down to this, just about every sport is cheap.

Stick, ball, street/field and you have baseball.

Ball and field/street and you get football/rugby.

Ball, basket/hoop, something to tie it to and you get basketball.

Etc., etc.

So god damn boring and the players are soft as shite.

I've tried watching it. I don't like it.

Only if you don't know how to read

quote:

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted Dec. 4-11, 2017, with a random sample of 1,049 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. All reported margins of sampling error include computed design effects for weighting.

Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 70% cellphone respondents and 30% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by time zone within region. Landline and cellular telephone numbers are selected using random-digit-dial methods.

Feel free to click the link in there for the actual PDF of question asked and the exact wording

And while it may not be a perfect science in all situations, completely disregarding polling data like you did is just plain idiotic

Comparing favorite sports is not the same thing as comparing their popularity.

Of they asked them to rank the sports, we may have a clearer picture.

While I completely understand why it doesn't peak everyone's interest, there are upsides of watching soccer compared to other sports.

1) It's fluid. There is no start-stop in play. Basketball, and more so football, have a commercial every 2 minutes.

2) I know when it's is going to end. When you sit down to watch a soccer match it will be over in 2 hours, guaranteed. Whereas a football game can last anywhere from 2 and half to 5 hours depending on the flow of the game.
