Dont you ever say another unkind word about Skip Bertman.

What was he supposed to do? Become an NFL team?

Skip basically told Saban to pack his bags when Saban was still undecided.

Skip’s ego got in the way of paying Saban a bit more to keep him which he could have done. I blame Skip’s jealously of paying too much for letting Saban go. Great baseball coach and I am proud of him for this.

Saban already had one foot out the door when Emmert left.
It was just a matter of time.

No, Skip told Saban: "This is the line, we go no further." They were getting sick of Saban's bullshite every year.

He would have won about 10 National Championships by now @ LSU. I’m so glad Skip couldn’t deal with St. Nick’s BS.

Saban was going to the NFL no matter what Skip did or didn't do. He knew it, Saban knew it & Sexton knew it. Huizinga wasn't going to fly to Baton Rouge on Christmas only to leave empty handed.

The issue isn't him leaving for the dolphins, it's if he asked for the lsu job back after he failed in the NFL.

Skip Bertman was the worst athletic director

It wasn't bertmans fault. Wayne Heyzinga bought off Terri Saban

Yeah and what did you expect Skip to do? Think through this now...Here comes this guy who is a known meglamaniac who tried directly and through his agent to undermine you. And now he wanted his old job back!!!Miles was winning (and no it did not matter if it was with players Saban recruited). He ended up 21-4 after two years with two bowl wins. Going to fire that to take back a guy who left you for the NFL and subsequently failed!???
No one in 2004 or 2006 would have the foresight to know a)Saban was going to win 6 NCS in 10 years, b) end up at a historical rival in same division c) have his lover/brother from another mother end up head of NCAA and d) backed by a white collar criminal organization like the REC who probably have the goods on the NCAA and have been blackmailing them since the tail end of their probation days. Skip would not have known these things back then when he and the BOS basically told Saban to geaux to h*)).
And before he left for the NFL, the way it was told to me years ago he basically gave LSU an ultimatum that had more to do than just money. Perhaps insiders like TBL can shed more light. From what I understand it was basically a demand and requirement for LSU to hand over everything to Saban where he had unquestioned mega power. No AD in the world who had Skip's track record as a former coach and how respected he was at an institution like LSU would let that happen. Just think through that for a moment along with understanding how human nature works.
Bama got lucky and those seances with the forces of darkness worked for them. So did Saban. He found a program that was so desperate, so corrupt and with a league office in their back pocket they were willing to do anything. Pure luck because not too long ago Alabama was more dysfunctional (and delusional) than LSU is currently if you can remember that. The timing was almost surreal as if supernatural forces were involved.

Pretty damn frustrating. Of all the big programs with a job opening, it just had to be Bama. Just had to be.
We all knew Saban was going to the nfl, and of course LSU wasn’t going to fire Miles after 2006. It’s just the way things go. But I just wish it had been any other school besides fricking Bama.

Bama was a position he coveted due to him knowing how much stroke they have with B'ham in their back yard and how the REC would do anything to win. Their hero worship mentality appealed to his mega ego. But if there was no opening, there is no opening.
If he had hung on to NFL a little longer and then ended up at USC and ND eventually that would have been lesser evils. I don't care for either of those schools but better than Bama.
And to think Michigan job opened up a year after that fateful fall of 2006. How ironic it would have been if it ended up him going to Michigan eventually and Rich Rod going to Alabama the same year!

Did Saban really want the LSU job back tho? Is that documented somewhere or has one of the past insiders claimed that?

quote:I distinctly remember Bertman saying that he wasn't going to get into a bidding war with Huizenga. He didn't put much effort at all into trying to get Saban to stay.
Skip basically told Saban to pack his bags when Saban was still undecided.
He did the same thing that Alleva did after Herman started talking with Texas; just ran away scared and didn't go to bat for LSU.
And Saban took so long to make a freaking decision that we missed out on Meyer and Spurrier.
