I see most people either love them or totally hate them and writethem off as being an underpowered deer gun.
Anyone here still use one?

Mines got 6 notches in it. Have killed deer from 5 to 150 yards with it and never been disappointed.
Word on the street is that the .30-30 is powerful enough to roll 3 lunchroom ladies.

150 yds is about my max comfort zone when I shoot mine. Underpowered? Not hardly.

probably killed more deer in the south than any other caliber.
edited to add, i'm old. Back in my day it was either 30-30 or 12 ga.

They’re great. Most people don’t shoot beyond 175 yards anyway.

I have 2 of them. Great guns and plenty power for a deer. A lot of folks (used to be me also) these days feel that you need a super duper shoulder cannon short ultra mag to kill a deer. I still have the magnum jolly whoppers but enjoy taking the 30/30 more than most.

Love mine, have killed the majority of my deer with it.

I don't like how it ejects out the top. Love my marlin though.

170 grain soft point Marlin .30-30 @ 50yds on a small doe
Since I was 12 Ive killed probably 20 deer with my Marlin .30-30. As already mentioned its a good gun for less than 150 yds.

No one can argue that the Win 30-30 has killed more deer than any other gun. Are there better guns? Yes, but the 30-30 is a very effective deer gun.

My sister has killed a pile of deer with a Marlin 336. I want a Model 94 pretty bad.
I think the 30-30 caliber is a great deer caliber out to 150 yards, and maybe a little more. They’re usually loaded with soft nose or hollow point bullets that expand reliably at the velocity provided by a 30-30. (I stay away from any ballistic tips for whitetail deer.)

From the age of 9 to 17 it’s all I killed deer with. Probably around 12 total but never over 150 yards. Savage model 170 pump w/ open sights. I shot that gun so much I didn’t need a scope, inside of 150 it was on the ground. Hope this helps with the decision on caliber.

I killed my first deer with a .30-30.
The .35 Remington in the same action is a better caliber. Slow 200 grain bullet is better than slow 170 grain bullet.
.308 or .358 come in compact, fast handling rifles, but they have a good bit more reach.
Most .30-30s come in lever action. That action isn’t as inherently safe as a bolt action is.

I do like the .35 rem more than .30-30 but both work really well.

if you use some premium loads or handloads they are plenty gun for 200 yds

I have rolled quite a few with my 336, and it's a great brush gun...

I have my dads old Model 94 and a Marlin 336.
The Winchester stays in the safe and will be the kids one day.

Those people are imbeciles.
I like 30-30, fun cartridge to reload for and lever-action rifles are fun to shoot.

Yea, frick those guys. The dog gets more work on 7mag jobs than .30-30 jobs.
