We have a culture problem... again.

I've been a member of the LSU community for a very long time, and I've seen this before.
It's actually taken me a while to realize it, because it happens so slowly. We have a culture problem. We've lost the winning, "championship" culture that defined our program and our community for a short time.
It's more than just playcalling, or recruiting, or who is the coach. This all begins up top. We lack visionary leadership. We lack the alignment from University President to Chancellor to Athletic Director to Head Coach to Staff to Players... (and taking it further, to fans and donors)... that is necessary for championship-level success.
Think back to the turn of the century. We had Jenkins, Emmert, Bertman and Saban. All of these people were visionary leaders who could communicate, inspire others, and execute a plan to transform LSU - resistance be damned.
These days we have a president who whines rather than leads, an athletic director who is careless with money and our public image, and a head coach that few respect or admire. (I'm not getting into the O argument here. But I think that's fair. Ask yourself if the rest of the SEC fears him). That is who is leading us. Think about who is setting the culture at LSU. Think about whether you agree with it. Think about whether you are inspired by it.
Now ask yourself if Bama is inspired. Or Clemson. Or Georgia. Or, even A&M. Yeah, you bet they are inspired.
LSU is a second tier power right now, and has been since 2012. We haven't finished better than third in our division since then. The problem is less about X's and O's as it is about culture. Who are the visionary leaders we can bring to LSU, and how do we get them?
The current crop? It's just not going to happen, folks.

It took an elite coach like Saban to...
A. Recognize the problem
B. Call out everyone from the fans to the grounds crew for their mediocrity accepting bullshite
And C. Be lucky enough to have solid leadership above him to execute a plan to take us to the next level and have the financial support to do so.
Emmert and Bertman never would have done all that alone.
Sadly our chances of landing the next up and coming visionary of a coach are getting slimmer by the day.

If we want LSU to be back where we want them to be, changes must be made at the very top for that to transpire

everything we had was shite on when we decided not to win and hired our DL coach as head coach.

All of this. You could build an LSU Mount Rushmore with this group. I think all 4 are the best that LSU has ever had at their position--president, chancellor, football coach, and athletic director--and they were all here at the same time.

Great post, you are spot on. To leap frog, LSU needs to think big and radical to change culture to get results expected.

You make some valid points. I recall a presentation from my previous job with a slide that read: “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” The good news is that the facilities and program history are in place to regroup with the right leadership.

What is missing here is when Saban came in he completely shut out the good ole boy BS that was allowed to go on. Under Miles it started to come back. Now under O its fricking Good Ole Boy paradise. Backroom deals and backstabbing galore. Board members who think they are gods.

I agree with everything you said, but you stopped too soon. You said "all the way to the top" but you only went up to the university president. All the way to the top means higher than that. It's the jackasses on the board of supervisors, the corrupt politicians who hand out positions on it as political favors for their cronies, and, ultimately, the people who keep electing these frickwads. All the way to the top ultimately leads all the way to the bottom, the very grass roots. It's simple GIGO. Garbage people elect garbage political leaders who appoint and confirm garbage board members to oversee the university who hire garbage administrators who hire garbage people to do the individual jobs like teaching classes or coaching sports teams. And, no surprise, we wind up with garbage results in the classroom, on the playing field and everywhere else.
This is, as you said, a culture problem. A problem with the very culture of the state of Louisiana. And it will never, ever change. It's why just about everybody with a brain and a chance leaves that shithole.

I think we're just a few plays away. We've got to get a kicker and dedicated special teams coach or focus. We're right there. Will be interesting to see what changes we make to get the adrenaline going.
