Was Caligula truly mad? Was he really crazy?

Or was he instead hell-bent on revenge. Step back and think for a second.
His father was murdered by Tiberius. Germanicus was well-loved by the troops and seen as a threat to Caesar. Tiberius and his supporters killed or ruined all of Caligula's family and friends.
So when Caligula assumes power, is he nuts or does he have an overwhelming desire to wreak havoc on the society and culture that destroyed his family? He was the first Roman emperor to realize what absolute power truly meant and was going to teach the class that wiped his family out a true lesson in absolute power?
or was he driven mad by the need for revenge, for living in a kill or be killed world? Just something I was pondering.

Could've actually been a good movie if Guccioni hadn't taken over the editing himself and destroyed the remaining footage. First 30 minutes with Peter O'Toole is not bad.

Doesn’t matter, had lots and lots of sex?

You need to watch less Game of Thrones.

I'd be curious to hear about all the "little stuff" he did leading up to the "big stuff" that made it to print.

I think his horse would’ve made a great consul. I wish horses would replace our legislators.

Eh, I never bought into the Tiberius killed Germanicus theory.
Tiberius was basically isolating himself from the world, I know he was all paranoid and what not but he was worried about getting murdered not so much secession.
So I’m gonna say no, Caligula wasn’t out for revenge he’s just crazy as frick

Caligula gets power, makes some reasonable decisions that are politically expedient, then gets sick/poisoned and comes back with a boner for exicutions.
Pretty good argument for the crazy.

This.
Historians must be very careful whenever they feel the urge to reach any conclusion with any kind of certainty because the historical record for so much of history is significantly incomplete.
As such, incomplete historical records is one problem. Another problem is the problem of Propaganda. Sometimes the historical record is inaccurate or contains deliberate lies in order to serve a particular national or political agenda.
The historical records regarding Ancient Rome are often too incomplete to allow us to be certain about many things. With regard to more modern history, even as late at the World Wars, the historical record may be complete but inaccurate due to propaganda. For example, British wartime propaganda for both World Wars has affected our historical interpretation of some issues arising out of both World Wars. This affect continues even to today, 2017.

Right. Don't buy the revenge, rather he saw the power he could wield and had a twisted sense of humor about it all.
Tom Holland's book Dynasty: The Rise and Fall of the House of Caesar was a fantastic read about all the Julio-Claudians

Suetonius was not exactly flattering to any of the Caesars.
