OB dads, what age did you first take your little girl hunting?

The first time I brought my daughter was when she was 4. I had a doe on camera always coming to the plot at 4:20. We got there at 4 and sure enough the doe showed up. We watched her for about 30 min. Since then my daughter is hooked! Bring iPads, snacks, coloring books etc to get through the slow times.

I started bringing my daughter about that age. Only box stands, good weather, only afternoon hunts and close to road so we could get in later without disturbing other members hunts. I let her bring all kind of stuff to occupy her time but found a pad / pen was what she liked best. As she got older we played hangman and tic tax toe a lot. Then at 14 she said she didn’t want to hunt anymore for now. Kills me but I am patiently waiting and hoping she will want to hunt again. My favorite memory is she was about 5 and brought her suction cup bow and arrow. Sitting on my lap she could see out the stand window. We watched a spike walk toward us. She got off my lap and got her bow when he was almost under stand. She asked if she could shoot him and even though she couldn’t see anything she launched an arrow out the window. It landed about 20 feet from him. She looked up at me and with a very excited look said “ daddy did I get hm”? I told her almost my baby. Almost. I will never forget that.

I've been taking her ever since she could keep up. Keep it fun. If you're after a big buck, and you're planning to hunt all day in freezing temps and stiff winds, that might not be the day to take her. But, if you keep the hunting relatively easy and fun, she'll probably love it.

Took mine squirrel hunting couple years ago when she was around 5 or 6. It was a nice walk through the woods, but that's about it. Haven't been able to convince her to go hunting again since. She likes hiking the trails at Jean Lafitte Park and Clark Creek and we've had fun camping trips to Tunica Hills....but she has zero interest in the hunting aspect of the outdoors.

First time I brought my little girl was when she was 5. She's now 8 and has come a couple times with me. Her first hunt was fun for both of us. I dressed her up in her little camo and orange, and she had to bring her little pink bow too. We had a lot of water that year, so the only downside of the hunt was having to carry her, an ice chest of snacks and drinks, her bow, her chair, my gun, and my pack a couple hundred yards to the box stand lol. Didn't see anything that day but she had fun.

I brought my son for his first hunt this year, he's 3. I bought him and my daugher, now 8, to sit in my box. It was pretty rough keep both of them quiet together but we got through it. Their Ipads and snacks kept them busy for most of the afternoon.

My son's second hunt this year was a blast. Ended up shooting a doe with him right next to me. He was super pumped and I got a lot of pictures and videos of him to remember that hunt. I'll never forget it thats for sure.

Brought mine out for the first time this season, she's 3. Like someone said, bring plenty snacks and she'll be fine. She's always jumping up looking for deer and making a bunch of noise, but it's all good. I don't take her out in extreme cold or when the mosquitos are bad.

When you think you have enough snacks. Pack some more. It's unreal how many they go through.

A bird book and binoculars are good to bring as well

5 years old was when I took my daughter on her first hunt. Took iPad headphones and lost of snacks. We stayed about an hr and a half. Saw some turkeys, but nothing to shoot. Ended up going together three more times that year. Took her opening day as a six year old and she shot a button buck and was absolutely hooked after that. Rule of thumb for me is to have my kids enjoy their time and when they are ready to go we leave.

Great advice in here. Brought mine at 4. Afternoon hunts on a mild day are the key. I brought her to the doe stand and brought a gun but did not intend to shoot anything unless a monster walked out. We sat there for 3 hours and whispered about nature, hunting, and every single animal that moved around. I plan on bringing her several more times before shooting with her in the stand, but that was the most fun i have had in a deer stand.

Her questions made me realize how much I have begun to take nature for granted.

Duck hunting at 6 and deer hunting she was 8. Saw deer the whole weekend her first time deer hunting. Dropped her first deer in its tracks at 65 yds in her 3rd hunt. Has killed 8 does and 1 buck since then. Got into bow hunting last year. Killed her first bow deer a couple weeks ago at 13 yrs old. I hope she sticks with it or comes back around if she loses interest during her teen years.
