Rian “Star Wars Ruiner” Johnson Responds To Audience Critics, Explains His Philosophy

“Lucas never made a Star Wars movie by sitting down and thinking, ‘What do the fans want to see?’ And I knew if I wrote wondering what the fans would want, as tempting as that is, it wouldn’t work, because people would still be shouting at me, ‘F— you, you ruined Star Wars,’ and I would make a bad movie. And ultimately, that’s the one thing nobody wants.”
There you have it.
His ultimate goal was to not make a bad movie and to help assure that he did not make a bad movie, he did not consider what fans might want to see.
This guy sure has his finger on the pulse.

Reworded what he's really saying:
I didn't want to try to make a great star wars movie because I might fail so I instead decided to make a terrible movie and then I wouldn't be upset because I knew it would fail.

They must be really feeling backlash to be putting out this many comments.
For the way Disney has handled the MCU to interact seamlessly while still allowing directors to make their own movies, I would’ve expected an even more seamless coordinated effort for Star Wars, the largest IP ever. I cannot believe anyone involved looked at this movie and said “This is perfect. You’re going to throw away all the backstory and goodwill that JJ gave us with TFA? Roll with it Rian. Throw away all of the character development of Luke Skywalker and turn him into an inept idiot. We love it. ”

“I may have gone to far in a few places - George Lucas” - Rian Johnson

Because that’s what this movie basically did.
Luke Skywalker, farm boy in Star Wars destroys the Death Star. Grows up in a hurry to lead Rogue Squadron in Empire. Holds his own against Darth Vader. Completes his Jedi training and then bests the two most powerful Sith in history while turning away from the Dark Side and redeeming his father in the process.
BUT... decides on a whim his nephew can’t be redeemed and needs to die in cold blood, thereby creating another monster the likes of which the galaxy hasn’t seen since his father, who oh by the way is a Force Ghost and clearly has spoken to Luke as Luke knows all the gory details of his fathers fall to the dark side that even Obi Wan and Yoda didn’t know? (Based upon what he says to Rey)
I mean did Rian even watch Star Wars?

He’s a pussy, clutching his girlfriends hand hoping people laughed at his stupid prank call to open the movie.

Fixed it for him.

Well, doing it his way still resulted in a bad movie so...

But even after his training he still couldn't best the Sith. His dad died saving his life
So there IS NO WAY IN HELL, Rey or Kylo is capable of beating Snoke (whoever the hell he is)

If the director have to come out and “explain” himself, you know he made a sh*tty movie.

Was Luke really trying at that point? He was willing to sacrifice himself to redeem his father. He’s pleading with him.

No argument here. What a waste of a buildup. Even if Rey is Anakin reborn, it’s still a stretch.
The most likely outcome of this is we find out Rey is Han and Leias daughter and the conflict is between brother and sister. It wouldn’t surprise me if we find out Han’s mothers name is “Reyna” or some variation in the Han Solo movie. Rey was stashed on Jakku after Ben fell to prevent him from coming after her and her memory was Force wiped. Ben might not have even known he had a sister being away at the Jedi academy.
Good lord I’ve come up with a better plot in five mins of musing.

The only problem with this is that Han and Leia treat Rey as a perfect stranger
no way they could do that unless they also had their memories wiped

Look man I could’ve made a good movie or I could’ve pushed my SJW agenda. You can’t have both. -Rian Johnson

frick you Rian, you ruined Star Wars with this movie. You don’t have to give the fans everything they want, but you have to give them something that they want, and make a Star Wars movie in the process, not some hackneyed piece of shite

Nearly half the Star Wars fans abhorred the movie. They’re definitely feeling the pressure.

There's a difference in Lucas telling the story he wanted to tell and Johnson producing glorified fan fiction on a billion dollar budget.

Main gripe of the this overarching sequel trilogy is there are too many characters. The OT was great because it was mostly a small story about this small. Group of rebels. Luke Han and Leia were largely together most of the time. It was the dynamic between them that made us love it.
In this new one you have Rey Finn and poe and Rey doesn't even meet poe until the very last minute of the 2nd movie.
Too much time had been spent with characters we don't need to see that have no meaning. Instead of rose it should have been finn and Poe going on an adventure or they go straight to Crait after escaping in the beginning and they are setting up the base and in a much larger tactical battle. For most of the latter two thirds of the movie while Luke is training Rey.

There's really nothing wrong with what he said, but because the movie isn't well received people will read something negative into it. For something to be good risks have to be taken and he couldn't worry about pleasing everybody because it just wasn't ever going to be possible.

What do the fans want to see?
Seems like the #1 priority when creating a product for consumers.
Star Wars is ready made. There is plenty of room to introduce new characters and themes within the existing framework. It's literally a whole fricking galaxy of which we know little about.
Instead he said "Nah frick it. I don't care about the reasons why people even enjoyed Star Wars in the first place. Im going to edgy and frick it all up fam."
