Yeah forget about giving the original characters a good story or continuing the story from the last movie. That’s something the fans would want to see and would be bad by default.

Good movies are only when you do what is unexpected people!

So he intentionally ignored what Star Wars fans wanted to see?

Bold strategy.

Instead he made the movie that the average non-star Wars fan wanted to see. Hooray.

Now we get slapstick humor in serious moments and floating space Leia

“Lucas never made a Star Wars movie by sitting down and thinking, ‘What do the fans want to see?’ And I knew if I wrote wondering what the fans would want, as tempting as that is, it wouldn’t work, because people would still be shouting at me, ‘F— you, you ruined Star Wars,’ and I would make a bad movie. And ultimately, that’s the one thing nobody wants.”

So he Ridley Scott'd himself with way less talent. At least that explains it.

If you don't want to make a Star Wars movie, I don't know, how about not signing on to make a Star Wars movie? If you fail that logic, but still want to make a Star Wars movie, how about not relying so much on that Star Wars movie that you hate so much? All those characters that irritate you, the storylines and symbols that are prevalent... how about not actively destroying them, and instead pay quick homage and find a new story?

If you don't like what Luke brings to the story, how about not bringing Luke into the story? Again, if you fail logic, how about, instead of making Luke into a lame version of himself and throwing the light saber, maybe he disassembles it while explaining what he doesn't like about the Jedi coldly. He takes the Crystal out and says...

"This is important. We need to find the balance again, everything built around the Jedi was broken, like this light saber."
"Take this crystal, and build your own light saber."

And scene.

The more I think about this, the more retarded it is.

How do you get involved with a franchise, any franchise, and ignore what the fans of the franchise want?

Don't you see? The mythos of Star Wars is what actually makes it bad

He could have made a movie that "deconstructed Star Wars" or "destroyed the tropes" or whatever stupid catchphrase people want to use and still made a good movie. There are a few small moments in this one.

But Johnson was lazy and didn't want to flesh any of that out so he took the shortcut of making most of the characters look like assholes, instead.

Ahhhh, makes sense.

"You know all those people that love Star Wars and turned it into the most profitable franchise in the history of ever? Yeah, we're gonna tell them to frick off."

I had a "wtf, are you kidding me?" look on my face for at least 1/3 of the movie.

I'm kind of surprised that nobody has made a gif of Luke looking all crazy and dribbling milk out of his mouth yet.

why do the critics love this movie?

Even fanboy sites like IGN love it.

Its crazy how big the critic-fan chasm is for this one.

So much has been made of the social and political statements the film made that critics are afraid to step out of line for fear of backlash.

my wife had to keep hitting me cause i was saying it out loud. The prank call, when luke tossed the light saber. His brush off the shoulder, him "dying" after his force use. those were the main times i literally said it out loud and she was hitting me to shut up.
