Wanting to know if you paid for suitcases and stow away bags? A friend told me he didn't pay for them online and they didn't charge him at check in, so he didn't have to pay anything for them

I've never flown spirit so unfortunately I can't answer the question, but based on what I know about them that seems highly unlikely. It was my understanding that aside from your seat you pretty much pay extra for each and every additional thing you do, like even the snacks.

I usually fly Spirit when going to Minneapolis from Chicago. I pay for a carry-on and have never tried to game the system by not paying. Pretty sure they can charge you up to $100 at the gate, so this seems risky.

If you don't have a connection and the weather is ok, you should be relatively ok.
They will make you pay for a bag. If its a centimeter over the measurements or over weight you are paying out the arse. So just bring a backback if you can.
If you have a connection or there are cancellations you are royally fricked, because they very often don't have enough flights to get you back...ever.

I’ve used them once and outside of them being the only option, I’ll never use it again.

This. We just used them to go to Vegas thinking we'd save money flying a "budget" airline. Big mistake. There are more "hidden fees" than you can think of - bags, seat choice. No food or drink provided on flight. Plus they moved our flight time with no explanation whatsoever. Would never fly them again.

I used them once from San Antonio to Atlanta and it wasn't the best. That carry on price is be tough and I could've played the game about just bringing on and not paying. Like it was said earlier, didn't want to have to pay alot. Play was very meh but the flight attendants that day were nice. If its the only option then I would fly it, but I would much rather fly something else if given the chance.

I bought a 18x14x8 spinner on ebay because I didnt want to risk paying extra. It didn't go over a mm but they didn't even check at the gate. Unless the bag looks obviously way too big, they never check. You register that you have a personal item when you buy the ticket.
Cheap ticket price, schedule was on time, no extra charges because I researched beforehand. I didn't really care about no meals and no drink. I will use them again.

Costco sells a bag that fits under the seat that can fit 4-5 days worth of clothes in it. No extra charge. Have used spirit a few times in the last few months for the cheap flights to Miami and haven’t had any issues. Also if you book at the airport you save 40$ or so. I went to FLL for under 50$ round trip a couple weeks ago.

I flew Spirit on a short flight back in April. I paid for just a small personal item but don't recall them trying to verify any of this when I boarded. If I had taken a standard carry on, I believe I would have gotten away with it.
As for the flight itself, it was fine. Seating might have been a tad more cramped than other airlines, but I was only going from NOLA to Houston to connect with another flight.
I have no complaints and would fly with them again under the right circumstances.

I do not fly Spirit because my company pays for my flights, but I have several friends who take them from time to time. I am under the belief that the only free thing you can take on is a personal item (backpack).

Flew them Vegas to lax and it was fine. I had a gym bag and was expecting to get charged and nobody said a thing. Their planes are a lot newer than the southwest fleet so that was nice. Only thing that sucks is the lessened leg room, but for a short flight it’s no big deal.
Wouldn’t fly them cross country though.

Agreed. No way I would consider Spirit for a cross country flight. As I mentioned in my initial post, I only fly Spirit from Chicago to Minneapolis. It's less than an hour and, typically, cheaper than flying American and United out of O'Hare and Southwest out of Midway.

There's always a chance some clerk or agent just doesn't give a shite that day. But last time I flew a bargain airline (Frontier), they didn't like the size of my backpack and tried to charge me not only the regular fee you'd pay at check-in, but an addition $30--total $65 for a carryon. I freaked out on them and she knocked it back down to regular non-online price but yeah, no good.

I’ve also flown them out to LA 2x recently. That’s not something I wanna do again especially since the bag under the seat takes up all of the leg room. have the southwest companion pass right now but went spirit anyway bc it was like 70$ one way to LA. Prob won’t do that again tbt.

I actually flew with Spirit on Monday flying back from O’Hare. My girlfriend had paid for a carry on. However, nobody checked. I’ve read about them checking though, not sure of the odds, but I guess it would be rolling the dice.
