This is a huge problem. Someone has to take the low wage jobs to service the 30,000 plus hotel rooms and do the kitchen work at the hundreds of restaurants.
Sure it's nice the property values and rents are soaring, but we need these low skilled workers to have a place to live nearby or some decent transportation.

One thing that a lot of Louisiana natives don't understand is that New Orleans is, for the most part, the state's only shot at attracting a lot of large economic developments. Even though it's hard to view New Orleans as the future of Louisiana with all of its problems, it's really the only way forward. No other city in Louisiana can realistically compete against the better midsize cities in the US

Remember the ads on TV calling for folks to go out and vote for a millage increase because
"it won't raise YOUR taxes".
Which ties to the assessors whose friends' homes were always assessed much lower than sale price, or even what they paid.

Exactly. You can't have marginal transportation then expect everyone to go outside the city of they can't afford $1500/mo housing.
Thing is, the park and ride from Kenner to nola is dead. It takes nearly two hours and four transfers to get from Kenner to downtown by bus.
Almost that long to the East as well.
I'll give RTA credit they have expanded routes, but off you really want all the poor in the East and the Wank you have to give them a way to get back and forth.
Shutting down the ferry to Jackson screwed a lot of workers of magazine st restaurants who came from the west bank.
Look at bus stops, most of those people are in work uniforms. We complain about an extra fifteen minutes of traffic like it ruins the day. Imagine waiting another 30-60 minutes for the next bus after a long day at work.
It's getting to the point where all uptown and central downtown(fq, bw, marigny) places either rent section 8, or at high end prices.
If I had a family on a $70k a year income and wanted a house, the only options would be Gentilly, Algiers or the East, if I didn't want to be in outright ghetto.
Not everyone is into the higher prices. A customer of mine on St Ann with a view of City park was renting out his 1b1ba bottom apartment for $675.
He knew he could get $1000 easily, but said he just wanted a fair price.

Have to wonder where Louisiana's cities would be with decent public transportation, decent highways, and better drainage.

This isn't like saying Rio could be a nice city. Yea it's pretty but that doesn't mean it'll ever be a good place to live.

I agree that New Orleans definite thinks along those lines.
In reality, it can't compete with mid tier southern cities for anything beyond tourism or ports. There absolutely has to be more cooperation between NOLA, BR, Hammond, and north shore.
I know people hate sprawl, but it may actually benefit Louisiana if there was more economic and political overlap in those areas. And perhaps a few competent leaders.

The city has been run by Democrats since the 1870s. At that time New Orleans was the 6th largest city in the country.
