Between Cole and McCutchen the results will be underwhelming if I was a Pirates fan... I feel bad for arguing with the guy yesterday now. He has a reason to be depressed.

they might as well officially transition into a farm team

3:17pm: A big leaguer could be headed back to the Pirates as part of the return, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area (on Twitter), though he notes that the Major Leaguer wouldn’t be a huge piece of the deal. Baggarly tweets that Joe Panik is not going to Pittsburgh — crossing another name off the list.

Yeah, that was about quantity more than quality but still a damn good trade for the Astros and could end up good for the Pirates. Just surprised the Astros managed to hang on to Fisher.

And that is an awful big Center field for Cutch to be running every home game. And there are questions about his legs, and how long before they finally give out.

Giants are old, have NO prospects, and really should of been selling off pitchers and players to rebuild, they need it.

Reports are they are still looking to sign lorenzo cain

If that gets done it wont look too bad but depending on a lot of aging guys to not break down

This Pirates strategy of stockpiling AAAA talent is bizarre

and if theres anything the giants need, its locking up an outfielder going into his age 32 season for long term whose game is heavily dependent on his athleticism in the field

Cutch would have lead their team in homers by 10 this past season and been second in OPS. Cain would have been second in homers (3rd with cutch) and 3rd in OPS (4th with cutch)

Im not saying in a long term view they look good but IMO makes them better for one more go round. Just a bet (big one) that they stay healthy.

How close is SFG treading toward 00's Philly "held on way too long" waters?

They won multiple ships, I don’t blame them for trying to cling onto what they had.

Kyle Crick is one guy going back to Pittsburgh. Like Musgrove and Feliz he was a starter prospect converted to relief and his stuff played up quite a bit. Maybe the Pirates will be the first team to try to tandem a few rotation spots. I’m only kind of kidding

First team to go to 3 starts and then a bullpen to lock down games

still waiting for the update with mccutchen, but they have been projected to be within one game of the rockies, mets, and dbacks and are like 7 or 8 games behind the cards. those are their competition for the wild card and i really dont know how much better this makes them. they absolutely got better and they basically gave up nothing, but they are still 100% on shaky ground still when it comes to getting a wild card spot

After watching this unfold, I feel like my Indians are really falling behind. The world champs have some stout young talent...and managed to keep some of it while adding Cole. No way he sucks it up again like last year. This is in addition to their rotation from last year, which had an abundance of arms when healthy.

Their lineup isn’t going anywhere.

In the meantime, the Yanks add Stanton.

The Indians? They lose Santana, Bruce, and Shaw, and haven’t really done anything to add. I know they are expecting a healthy Zimmer. I guess I haven’t totally given up on Naquin, but I guess it’s same ol’ Tribe.

Cleveland hasn’t typically made the really aggressive moves to try to push things over the top. It’s part of the reason they’ve been able to sustain success pretty well in a small market but perhaps also why they haven’t won a title

I feel like they should have pushed for Machado as he fit into a weak spot for them

Cutch with a move for Cain and IMO they are definitely right there for it (if everyone stays healthy). Without cain as previously mentioned thats a lot of ground for an old McCutchen and it will take a toll on his bat+health. Plus looking at their last year stats its pretty staggering just how bad they were.

They should have gotten more for Cole. As an Astros fan I was shocked at the package we gave up

The Pirates like to pick teams to donate talent 2.

In past it was the Cubs, they would just donate guys for bench players. It was a joke how much the pirates would help the Cubs.

I would have creamed myself had they gotten Machado, but that is a huge long shot. I’m heading they’d have to trade Kipnis to make room for their budget.
