The thread is fine if you ignore the knee-jerk Pirates fan

And I don't blame him for being upset and short-sighted, but the whole comparison of leagues is mental masturbation

Musgrove and Moran were seen as the top two pieces of the trade by the Pirates, and they pulled the trigger on the deal since Pittsburgh felt no other team was offering two top prospects of better quality in exchange for Cole.

Also from Crasnick, the Yankees were willing to include one of Clint Frazier or Chance Adams in a potential Cole trade, but not both. New York was also intent on holding onto its top minor leaguers, as Gleyber Torres, Miguel Andujar, Justus Sheffield, and Estevan Florial were considered off-limits in trade talks.

quote:

The Pirates’ return was “more one of quantity than of impact,” ESPN.com’s Keith Law writes, though Cole may only be “a soft upgrade” for the Astros rotation if he replicates his 2017 numbers.

quote:

“I’m ecstatic. I got the phone call not too long ago and I was shocked. I couldn’t have been more happy. I’m familiar with a few people on the organization and the team,” Cole said to reporters

Thx for the quotes

I think the deal should be considered fair, but I know the other GMs had to have shared a moment of silence at some point.

Pirates should have taken Frazier and then traded Clutch

I know Im the minority, but I dont believe in Frazier. Plus, he is a OF, and the Pirates have Marte, Polanco, and Meadows once the trade Cutch.

The deal they took might not be great, but I think they got at least 3 major leaguers that are above replacement level.

I hope it works out for the Pirates and Moran, Musgrove end up starting this year. Feliz I assume will come out of the pen.

Again, what part of Front offices are smarter are you struggling with? Look around analytics and the people running baseball know what they're doing. You can't compare things that happened 20 years ago.

I am not dating myself 20 years. I'm saying along the 20 straight losing seasons we did this time and time again. Little success came of this.

quote:

To do what? Produce like he did last year? Bounce back to what he was before? Face it, Cole is a name but you have no idea how he pitches next year.

To be a superior major leaguer than the prospects we received are.

And we have countless time a trade happened that people were upset because a "name" player was traded, then that player sucked for his new team.

I think it is understood that receiving solid major league talent will benefit a ML roster more than prospects eventually do.

You have no clue what you have

Why? Because I cannot predict the future? Based on prior years stats he is the one of the best, if not the best, SP for the buccos.

quote:

You believe the 60k savings was about money? That is nothing to a MLB team, they released him. I mean you have to be one of the worst fans to be this despondent about this deal instead of seeing the potential of the 4 players involved. It is almost like Mariners fans when they traded Johnson, they thought it was the end of the world and those players turned out to be important pieces for the next few years, Even though Johnson continued to be a stud.

We had 98 wins just a few years ago and management let all these go with no talent to replace them on the roster. The beat goes on.

We had 20 straight losing seasons.

Three above average years.

Two straight losing seasons and we're already rebuilding.

Excuse me for being a tad impatient. If the owner was actually willing to spend in free agent we would have to rebuild. The team made $86 million in profit the last two seasons according to Forbes. It's not like they didn't have the dough.

again you have no idea what you have.... Not sure why this one bothers you so much

Because teams line up to give away young controlled MLB ready talent? The Pirates and other teams that do believe they are not ready to compete and that by adding prospects they have a brighter future.

Congrats, based on last year if he was the best pitcher they had they are in trouble. Tallison actually had a lower FIP than Cole and will be the ace this upcoming season.

And who exactly did they get rid of? Pedro Alvarez? Neil Walker? JA Happ? AJ Burnett? Happ was the only one but he was 32 at the time... The fact that Cole hasn't pitched like a CY Young player and other players have had issues has been worse for the Pirates.

You will be rebuilding when they trade Harrison, Andrew, Marte, Polanco, Harrison, Nova, and Rivero

Astros receive:

2 years of control over SP Gerrit Cole ($6.75MM for 2018; arbitration for 2019) — following aforementioned 2015 season, Cole was limited by injury in 2016 and pitched to a 4.26 ERA with 8.7 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in a healthy 2017 season
Pirates receive:

4 years of control over RP Michael Feliz — carries 5.13 ERA (allowing 1.5 HR/9) through 121 MLB innings, but has averaged 12.8 K/9 against 3.6 BB/9

5 years of control over SP/RP Joe Musgrove — former first-round pick has been tagged for a .288/.339/.506 slash and 5.37 ERA over 25 MLB starts, but worked to a 1.26 ERA with 39:6 K/BB ratio in 35 2/3 innings last year after moving to the bullpen

6 years of control over 3B Colin Moran — former sixth overall draft pick slashed .308/.373/.543 with 18 home runs in 338 plate appearances at Triple-A last year, but has yet to receive significant time in the majors

6 years of control over OF Jason Martin — 22-year-old reached Double-A for first time in 2017, slashing .273/.319/.483 with 11 home runs in 320 plate appearances

quote:

The Yankees were reportedly willing to part with outfield prospect Clint Frazier in a trade for then-Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole earlier this offseason, but no deal come together between the teams. Although Pittsburgh ended up trading Cole to Houston on Saturday for a four-player package, the Pirates valued Frazier over everyone they got back from the Astros, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic. However, the Pirates liked the package they got from the Astros better than the offers the Yankees made, including a final pitch from the Bombers that consisted of three prospects, per Bowden

While Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has been popular in trade rumors this offseason, they’re not going to deal him

It's officially the end of an era in Pittsburgh. That window was closed last year, but is now slammed shut. They are going to be bad for a while.
