Some rival evaluators believe the Red Sox and Astros may be best positioned in the discussions for free agent reliever Mike Minor. Both teams have a need for a lefty.

Kaplan on shopping Fiers
I still think he would be a nice pickup for someone like San Diego with a huge park needing a guy who can eat innings. Could probably get him for next to nothing

With the deadline to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players looming, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros will “surely attempt to trade” right-hander Mike Fiers between now and that 8pm ET deadline on Friday.

Or they could wait until the deadline and get him for nothing.
Its no secret that Fiers pitched his way into a diminished role and off the post season roster. He's got no role on the Astros. He's affordable rotation depth who can be serviceable. It'd be nice to hold on to him for that reason but we've got a few back end/bullpen types which kind of force out Fiers. I think he ultimately gets non-tendered.

Oh Julia! Do we not have the best on field reporter in all of baseball?! Home town biased or not, she got it going on!

Probably but if he goes to the open market there’s no guarantee you get him if you’re SD. I think a low level lottery ticket would be worth it to get him and he will be cheaper than the innings eaters who will be true FAs

Just a reminder, in case anyone forgot.

On Ohtani, we’re going to pursue him aggressively,” Crane said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. “As aggressive as the rules will allow us.
“He’s going to land in one of the big markets, and we have as good a chance as anybody because we’re a good team.”

Meh. I'm not sure how much stock I put into that. Although, Crane doesn't do a lot of interviews or speak about team moves. You don't see a whole lot of him and he publicly just let's Luhnow do his job.
Regardless, it wouldn't seem the financials make us a favorite.

He is already missing out on millions of dollars by coming this year. It is clear he wants to win while he's young. So the difference between what the Astros can offer versus a team like Seattle or the Yankees is only $1.7 million (I think).
But what the Astros lack in money, they make up for because they can offer a 19 yr old stud a future HOF mentors in Justin Verlander and a reigning MVP and batting title champ in Jose Altuve. That is way more than almost all other teams can offer.
He will make his Gazillions of yen through endorsements in Japan.
I think the Astros have just as good of a chance as any team not named the Yankees.
Asia Pacific countries love them some NYY.

hmmmm Seattle has Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz, Felix Hernadez all accomplished in their own right.
The Yankees have Chapman, Robertson, CC (if he doesn't leave) Judge, etc....
I think many of the teams he wants to go to has accomplished players, Astros are the reigning champs however.

Seattle is contending for a World Series any time soon.
The Yankees do not have anyone close to Altuve when it comes to accomplished professional hitter.
That said... he will go to the Yankees. You think they are on TV a lot here? They are on TV all the time in Asia-Pac.

Yep. I'd give the Astros less than a 10% chance of landing him.

I think he ends up with one of these two just because of their connections with Asian players. The Yankees have Tanaka and Matsui is an advisor, Seattle had success with Ichiro and their current P.
