I think it was mentioned in season 3s first episode that aired 24 hours straight on April Fools Day. It's not a theme of the show but it's a part of that episode.

I really enjoy the show, I'm gradually catching up on it.
Of course, what I like is that it's Doctor Who if the Doctor was an alcoholic sociopath.

That's when I knew it was a full blown societal thing.
There is no way in hell I am standing outside a McDonalds for a fricking sauce. I did go to the Rick Mobile and get a shirt because it was fun, but I didn't lose my mind over it.

And check out this fricking hipster who paid godknows how much so he could go and show off his prized possession:
Apparently he won it in a limited give away and was even sharing it for free with people even though a similar bottle sold for $17K on eBay.

I think Rick and Morty is solid but I don't understand what it is about Rick and Morty that creates such a rabid fanbase.
It seems to mostly be just a nihilistic Dr. Brown and autistic Marty McFly rapid firing sci fi references. It's a fun show and all...but sheesh.

I'm one of the weirdos that still hasn't seen it but all the hype is really making me curious. Is it worth getting into?

It's fun and smart. Think an extremely nihilistic and potty humored Futurama.

It's hit or miss. I would say look up some list of best episodes and check out a couple of those.

It was a one-off, but incredibly funny bit that occurred at the end of their April Fools episode this year (an episode between Seasons 2 & 3 that served as a sort of sneak peak for season 3).

It’s absolutely worth watching, but like Seinfeld, it takes at least a few episodes to find its stride.
Like others have said, it’s a lot like a dirtier Futurama, except waaaaaaay darker. Alcoholic manic/depressive narcissist Doc Brown is a good description for Rick. He’s a self-loathing genius who hates everyone, but still feels attached to his family, is something a lot of outcasts can identify with. Morty is just an awkward 13 year-old kid, which makes him very relate-able. Summer is a typical self-conscious wannabe high school student. Beth is a mother who feels unfulfilled in her roll in life and takes it out on her kids. Jerry is a sad-sack incompetent, but he loves his family and does everything he can to protect him despite not being close to up to the task.
The characters are all complex, flawed, and relateably human.
The plots are typically taking really interesting slants on common sci-fi tropes and turn them on their heads.
One of the things that makes it really fun and unique is that it almost acts like it hates itself and its audience. It never takes itself seriously, or anything seriously. Rick openly mocks the plots as they’re unfolding. Morty clearly watched most of the movies they’re referencing and seems completely sick of it. It’s just completely different from anything else on TV except maybe those South Park episodes back when everything was about what the kids were doing rather than current events.

awesome thanks, I'll jump on board. What viewing options are there, is it on demand?

Kingbob is just dropping knowledge everywhere all over this site.

Yeah I’d suggest watching an episode from start to finish. This show probably seems incredibly stupid if you catch it on a random scene.
