I love the show but a lot of fans seem to think that the show is only for super smart people that rule their own little world in a holier than thou manner.

It's like when Inception came out.
People went on and on how only "smart" people could really understand it. Meanwhile it was just a movie about dreams within dreams.
Rick and Morty started out as a dick joke about back to the future and somehow evolved into this. You have to think Dan and Justin are a bit embarrassed at the monster they created.
