Let's just be up front and honest. The demographics of Pittsburgh are FAR different than the demographics of Baton Rouge. Pittsburgh transformed itself from a blue-collar steel town to a beacon for the tech industry. Does any one really think the demographics of BR are going to be enticing for the tech industry? Or any industry? Terrible infrastructure. Horrible public schools. Rampant corruption and incompetency in government.

quote:

Well, what happened to this from less than a year ago?

quote:
In a global economy and battle for attracting talent, we have to realize that Baton Rouge’s competition is not the region or state, but the entire nation. We can’t be parochial or think “small town,” because we aren’t anymore. We must be innovative and “think big,” or our children and grandchildren may have even larger issues to face. That is not a legacy we desire.

This is an important election. Baton Rouge is my hometown and I have lived here all my life. This community has been very kind to my family, and I love our capital city. I know Sen. Bodi White and Sen. Sharon Weston Broome, and they are both good people with a heart to serve. I have met with each, watched the debates and read their responses to the Baton Rouge Area Chamber questionnaire. It seems that on many of the issues, the candidates are in agreement on what needs to be done. So which will be the better listener and be more effective with the Metro Council and residents north and south? Who is the right choice at this time in history to unite our parish and move our city-parish forward? I thought about this long and hard. There are never any guarantees, and as they say, “The proof is always in the pudding.”

I concluded that Weston Broome is the servant-leader who can be the best mayor-president for our community and future.

McCollister is a stooge. He advocated for a incompetent racist mayor and got an incompetent racist mayor. Her whole agenda is "frick the city as a whole. Let's just somehow try to build up the part of the city no business in their right mind wants to invest it."

The previous mayor, who coincidentally had the same skin color as the current mayor, at least had a vision to make BR a great city. Downtown is leaps and bounds better than it was before Kip took office. He rarely (if at all) played the race card. Instead, he just went to work trying to make Baton Rouge a great city. He didn't always succeed, but at least he had the audacity to believe it could be. The current mayor wants to do nothing except steal and waste more tax payer dollars on things that will do absolutely nothing to better the city.

Choking down a major surface street to 2 lanes is a stupid fricking idea

The road diet plan actually makes perfect sense for Government Street.

Urban two lane roads with a continuous center turn lanes actually flow better than a 4 lane undivided street with no center turn lane. And they do so with fewer accidents. This is actually one of those things that are common knowledge among planners and traffic engineers, but seem counter-intuitive to others.

In the mid 20th century, a lot of cities and suburbs have made the mistake of widening two lane roads to 4 lane roads without a median or center turn lane. They did this as a response to traffic increases but with cost or space constraints. In many cases, they'd have been better off simply adding a continuous center turn lane or a divider to restrict left turns.

Article couldn't be more dead wrong. Baton Rouge is a very global city. No much so it's reminiscent of Lagos, Nigeria.

Outsiders who don't live along government cried because they'd have had to take a different route to avoid traffic.

The people who live along that corridor are fully behind the plan.

Strategically, the road diet on Government Street should be one of several big infrastructure priorities for the city.

They actually need to add capacity (lanes) to major arteries in other areas, such as Old Hammond, Perkins, Airline Highway, LA 30, etc.

dont know what this is, but if it doesn't involve overlaying Govt. Street its a total waste of time/money. That street could be the biggest abortion in BR. Only FL. street downtown is as fricked up.

Louisiana is incredibly behind the rest of the country. I've lived in NC, CA, CT, MA, NJ, TX, and MD

All of these states are vastly ahead of Louisiana in virtually every aspect (save violent crime)

I moved back to be closer to family and it's probably the worst financial, career, and family decision I've ever made. Louisiana is the worst, and least scenic, state in the country. Hell, even Mississippi has nice beaches and a Nissan plant.

We do we have; dead dogs on the sides of the roads because people can't be bothered to take care of them, plant stench that you can smell in every portion of the state, terrible beaches because of our reliance on "AWL AN GAZ", a public school system that ranks dead last and will likely get your son shanked and your daughter pregnant. We have a corrupt government at a local and state level due to our lack of education and our horrible demographics. Pander to the right air heads and you'll get elected; and that applies to the 'yaw yaw yaw' bunch too. "Gimme sum dat awl and gas sha"

The state never bothered diversifying its economy. We have the natural resources to be an economic powerhouse, but we're just a shite show instead.

I think it's just not worth trying to save. This state is a frickin wreck and I'm getting my family out of here within the next few years.

[insert well bye gif]

I drove on I-12 between Essen and O'Neal for the first time in a while the other day. Mother of God. That's one of the most chewed up stretches of interstate I think I've ever driven on.

We have terrible beaches because the river that drains 2/3rds of the country empties into the gulf

You're implying we had beautiful, sandy beaches before the spill.

No. I'm saying O&G has had an adverse effect on our ecosystem, despite what Exxon stuffs down our throats to believe.

You're saying we have shitty beaches because of an oil spill 7 years ago?

We don't have shitty brown beaches and brown water because we live on one of the largest alluvial plains on the planet?

Oh, Exxon caused the beaches and water to turn brown. Those sons of bitches in my geography class lied to me. I bet Exxon payed those bastards off too.

You're right. I apologize. Millions of people flock to Louisiana every year to enjoy our beautiful scenery and relax at Holly beach.

They call it the Cape Cod of the south.

I'm agreeing we have shitty beaches, dummy. But it's God's fault, not Exxon.
