They are addressing that, but if you are voting on a 180 million dollar plan to improve sidewalks, synchronization of lights, landscaping, and bike paths shouldn't you have an idea of what they are talking about?
Ride around BR now. I see sidewalks and bike paths being covered over now with grass and mud. They aren't taking care of what we have now. I want to see us fix what we have and a plan for the new stuff, and what we have now isn't telling me much.
But I know 180 million dollars could go a long way if applied to fixing traffic and improving the surface streets if used wisely.

They came back from Austin and said we needed to be like Austin is, but look at what they did.
Sure they promoted Downtown, that was needed, but when citizens showed an inclination to form ISDs as the county Austin is in does; you would have thought folks wanted to bring back slavery.
The same crowd that told us to be like Austin came unglued. Why was that? Money? Power? Not in their own interests?

Go down Nicholson when you leave LSU and when you get to Tigerland check out the condition of that bike path.
Drive around and notice sidewalks on major thoroughfares that are cut, broken and not fixed by the contractors who broke them.
It's bad, but no one in authority does anything about it,

I don't guess the lifestyle(s) of most in this state have anything to do with the cancer rate. ITS ALL O&Gs FAULT!!

What gets me is the POS Baton Rouge Business Report endorsed the very candidate for mayor that they acknowledge is sinking the place.

Umm.. this is cancer alley. Even for children. Louisiana literally has the highest childhood cancer rates per capita than any other US state, as per St. Jude who publishes stats year after year on this. The vast majority of them are from S. La.
If you are trying to claim it is related to poor lifestyle choices, MS nor any other poor-health state has nearly as many cases of childhood cancer.

Is this a huge problem?
I realize there is a need for sidewalks in places, that can't be denied; however, do we need 40 million dollars worth of new sidewalks?
At 485K+ per mile maybe we need that many new sidewalks. I don't know, but I haven't seen a case made that tells me we need 82 miles of sidewalks.
But maybe we do then Broome needs to make her case.

Oh I'm not claiming anything. I'm very skeptical of blaming an industry for a state that is so maligned with issues on so many levels. I get that kids get cancer. I also get that prenatal care in this state is dismal (on average) and that many parents live unhealthy lifestyles and practice piss poor parenting.
In short, I think its pretty simple to blame big oil for all of the state's woes- like cancer and nasty beaches. I just haven't seen any empirical evidence to prove O&G is the sole culprit and therefore deserves the blame.

Then we had the Water Campus. It was going to transform the area between LSU and Downtown. That and the Tram.

It's not that I oppose local taxes (even though we are already overtaxed at the local level.) It's that I have zero faith in our local politicians to use the tax revenue correctly.

There's more housing and hotels, but there's not more real jobs. They basically just moved offices between buildings. IBM didn't even fill their building. Downtown needs more jobs, but no one outside wants to invest there due to the traffic.
If BR could fix one of its big 3:
Traffic
Public education
Violent Crime
Investment would flock, but alas, its incompetent leaders are elected by people who profit from crime, bad schools, and NIMBYism, so they will simply continue to suck the host dry until the last few economically mobile people finally give up on resuscitating a city that does not want to be saved from itself.
The corrupt good 'ol boy cronyism combined with the entitlement mentality and birthrate have simply been too powerful to defeat.
It's not hopeless, but leaves little room for optimism.
If BR could fix one of its big 3:
