Grass fed beef

I've long been "cow pooling" with the idea that grass fed beef is safer/better for you. I started to question that somewhat when I heard this Skeptoid antibiotics and hormones episode. Then, today, I saw this and was curious as to the board's opinion:
quote:LINK
If you eat chicken with any frequency, say once a week, grass-fed beef will not decrease the amount of omega-6 fats that you consume. The chicken in your diet will overwhelm any decrease in omega-6 from eating grass-fed beef.
If you eat any salmon at all – and this is generally true for eating any type of fatty fish – you would get a far greater amount of omega-3 fats than from grass-fed beef.
Using the Pareto principle, that 20% of the inputs yield 80% of the benefits, you’d be better off giving up chicken and eating salmon regularly, say once or twice a week. Furthermore, a teaspoon of cod liver oil has about 1000 mg of omega-3 fats; since I don’t eat fish regularly, I supplement with fish oil.
If you eat no chicken – and importantly, eat nothing made with vegetable oil – and you eat fish regularly, and you have a lot of cash, then go ahead and buy the grass-fed beef. Otherwise, as I’ve shown above, you’d be better off making the other changes I noted.
Eating grass-fed beef is like a man with a pot belly trying to improve his attractiveness by buying a sports car. While a sports car improves his attractiveness, he’d be better off getting rid of his belly first before he goes and blows a bunch of money on a car.

I think it is a bit like the folks that say to eats nuts because they are a good source of protein. No if you need protein eat meat. If you need omega 3s eat fish. They may be other reasons to eat nuts or grass feed beef but not because they are marginal sources of something else you are trying to get.

I split a grass fed calf with a coworker 2 years ago. It was ok. If I were to do it again, I'd get most if not all ground meat.
Other than knowing that the cow is more organic than store bought beef, it's not that superior in taste to warrant the money that ppl pay at a Whole Foods.
But I've been shooting a few deer a year so I rarely buy beef any more.

While yes, grass fed beef is better, the omega 3 ratio isn't as much as one would think
Obviously, chicken is way up there in omega 6's. I go with corn-fed because of the costs. I use Kerrygold for butter, I feel fine. We always buy wild fish of any kind. I eat chicken occasionally, but find myself getting away from it.

It is essential, but not that much is required. High omega 6 will lead to inflammation.

I bought some ground meat and it stunk so bad when I cooked it. I could barely eat it because of the smell.

well it only leads to inflammation because our ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 is way out of whack. but in essence you are right because we eat way way too much of it lol.
Scrub to answer your question, junky's graph really sums it up pretty good. Sure grass fed beef is much better for you, but in the end the amount it will effect your ratio is going to be minimal just due to the amount in the meat and also the satiety factor. I mean I love beef as much as anybody but you can only eat so much.
Nutritionally you would be much better off taking 10g of a high grade fish oil and about 10g of a high grade dha oil like now foods dha500.
i know you don't like using supplements so you could always eat more salmon and other fatty fishes but beware, like beef, farm raised fish doesnt have the same 3 to 6 ratio as wild caught.
Another great source is free range eggs. Also check eatwild.com or local farmers markets. Many local farms will do whole cows for as little as $5 or so a lbs. Its a bunch of different cuts, but you can always turn the ones you do not like into ground beef.

My roommate's dad had a cow butchered not long ago. I ate some of the burgers, and they tasted noticeably better. He said the steaks were really thin, but the ground meat was the best burger I've ever had.
I know that has nothing to do with the Omega 6 discussion, but it definitely tastes better in my experience.

The ground meat was great. The steaks and roast were just ok. The fat is obviously different from smell and taste.

I know I'm in the minority here but I prefer the taste of grain finished beef.

I'm DEFINITELY in that camp as well.

Haha no you are in the majority. Grain finished taste much better imo as far as anything but ground beef goes imo.

I always love me a USDA steak but i miss the overall beef quality from europe. Meat in general you don't have to worry about the bullshite, like we do here in the US.

I think most people who would say otherwise are kidding themselves

Beef fed grass is delicious too

absolutely. i've tried many different cuts, grades, suppliers etc of gf steaks, and none was as good as Costco's choice grain-fed (or finished or whatever they do with grain--and this just an example).
And re: the omega 6:3 chart, not only is the grass-fed v. grain-fed/fin difference pretty insignificant as far as getting 3s (especially in ground beef), we should, of course, take into account the overall ratio of non-PUFA to PUFA in all beef and pork products (as you and others point out).
Ribeyes are nearly half saturated and half monounsaturated, with just a nominal amount of PUFA.
This is the breakdown I found (I deleted the %DV figures, as they are total nonsense):
Total Fat 100g
Saturated Fat 40.8g
Monounsaturated Fat 43.5g
Polyunsaturated Fat 3.5g
LINK
(eta: what's the other 12.2g of fat? i hate these labels) eta2: the sidebar on a google search shows:
Total Fat 63 g 96%
Saturated fat 28 g 140%
Polyunsaturated fat 3 g
Monounsaturated fat 31 g
Trans fat 4.3 g
So, in any event, the % of 6 and 3 combined in a ribeye is only 3 to 3.5% of the total fat. It's hard to justify the $ and taste sacrifice of grass-fed in that context (at least if your primary concern is the PUFA mix).

Actress Kristen Schaal grew up on a CO cattle ranch. She told a story in a WTF podcast interview about how one of the cows died and the family ate it.
She said something like, "But the meat wasn't any good because it was grass fed."
I thought that was funny as hell, what with folks now paying a premium for grass fed. Even a cattle rancher wanted some grain finished beef.
