I notice there are no women so far. I really can't think of anyone besides Katherine Hepburn.

Wanda Sykes is probably more recognizable these days.
I don't know that he makes it to the icon lost, but Vin Diesel has a distinctive voice.

ScarJo as far as women go.
Also, can't forget about Morgan Freeman.
And Jon Hamm is getting there with those damn Mercedes-Benz commercials

I'd say there's 3 clear cut ones-
Freeman, James earl jones and John Wayne.
I'll add James Stewart as 4, just because of his aww shucks everyman drawl.
Not sure who the definitive 5th would be, but many contenders mentioned in this thread.

Dennis Haysbert deserves a mention here - are you in good hands with Jobu?
Sean Connery's voice is instantly recognizable.
Jack Lemmon's narration was the only good thing about Legend of Bagger Vance.
Not sure it fits this thread, but Mel Blanc was amazing as well.

I think some of you are confusing distinctive with iconic. Just because I know sylvester Stallone from anyone else doesn't necessarily make it iconic.

Agree, an iconic voice doesn't mean oh they delivered some great dialogue. Anthony Hopkins should obviously have been mentioned, and this is out there a but perhaps but I think Tom Cruise has a pretty iconic voice. It's not deep and thick but the voice itself is pleasing and his crisp clear serious way of speaking has a lot to do with why he's able to pull off dramatic/action roles despite being 5'5 and not having an intimidating voice. Oh and Liam Neeson should be on the list

Neeson and especially Hopkins are definitely up there. I'm actually gonna change my first list for Hopkins. His voice as Hannibal lector is legendary

Laurence Olivier - just his narration of The World at War alone gets him in this discussion
James Earl Jones - his voice IS the character of Darth Vader, probably the most iconic villain in cinematic history

Yup
I always agree on Stewart's voice and John Wayne.
Robert Stack had an awesome voice as well

As much as I hate to say it, Whoopi is pretty recognizable.
I'd also throw in Hugo Weaving. Instantly knew it was him in V for Vendetta and had no clue who played him. I was like holy shite, it's Mr. Smith
