If only normal people ran the government.

A Canadian man built steps for his community park, but the City of Toronto is angry that he went ahead and did so even though city officials had estimated the project would cost $65,000 to complete.
Adi Astl, of Toronto, is a retired mechanic who decided to build the stairs at Tom Riley Park, in Etobicoke, Ontario, after several people fell down the poorly constructed pathway that led to a garden, according to CTV News.
Astl paid $550 in materials and also received private donations. He hired a homeless person and together the two built the eight steps.
Toronto officials had estimated the construction of the stairs would cost from $65,000 to $150,000.

The stairs lead to their council on aging

His staircase looks like a fricking death trap. But still worth saving the $64k.

$550 is like 70,000 Canadian dollars right?

looks like shite for a public usage

odds of those getting ripped out: 100%
Pretty funny though...goes to show you how obscene and ridiculous government is with our money.

It's amazing what a person will do for a bottle of Jack Daniels and a cardboard box.

The stairs have been blocked off by tape and they will remain that way until city officials come up with a solution.
Hey, I know! Let's give government more money!

I need to change careers and get into government contract work.

He's not that good, and looks like there is still more work to be done, but a set of 8 steps plus landing is a $1K job, not a $65K job. I wish govt had to earn the money it wastes.

Judging from the look of the stairs I'd say AT LEAST $30-$40.

They get you up that little slope for a lot less than $65K

That headline oversimplifies why it would take more than his shitty $550 steps. Is $65K insane? Probably but there's a lot more to it than just throwing down some treated lumber and pre-cut risers.
They aren't even ADA (or whatever it is in Canada) compliant.

lol no. $1K wouldn't even cover the insurance and bond a contractor will need before he even bids on a Government project.

So you're saying non ADA compliant?

They will tear it down because no government leader got to take a newspaper photo holding a shovel prior to it being built.
