Maybe a few months if they are actively pursuing employment which to me means spending 40 hours a week working the web, applying for any position they are even remotely qualified for, networking with anyone they can think of who may connect them with a job, and also picking up any part time work they can. If they are sitting on their arse playing video games and texting all day I would immediately drop them off at the nearest armed forces recruiting station.

I am in agreeance with this

I couldn't imagine wanting to live at home past 18-19, but I also shared a bedroom with a sister 10 years younger than me. I moved out at 18 for college. Only moved back once at 19, for like a month, then GTFO again.

And I would let my child move back home...but they are paying me rent. Which will quickly motivate them to get a job, any job, until they can find a better job. They can live rent free for like 3 months...then they have to start contributing. I didn't work my arse off so my adult child could mooch off me.

My daughter is getting a STEM degree. 6.7% of women that get degrees get a STEM degree. I don't see a problem with her finding a job once she graduates.

That being said, I am okay with her living with us even after she begins her career. My only requirement would be to bank monstrous amounts of cash. She needs to put away for a house and retirement early and often.

I'll share this bit of advice my Dad gave me growing up...

Our oldest lives with us .. difficult time finding a job in his field. He worked his rear off with his dad and is starting new job in two weeks. We wouldn't hang him out to dry but he also was t going to sit and do nothing. He was either working at the farm or applying/interviewing for jobs.

Go ahead, share your wonderful advice. I'm all ears, gramps. Please, half of you don't even have the first clue on today's world and remain stuck in your ways of how to live. It's honestly kind of pathetic seeing all of you "men" huddle up on a message board bashing today's youth because they're today's youth and we struggle to survive in today's economy (that you all fricked up btw) and don't like the same things you all do. So, please inform me of how you can better alter my life, I'm all ears.

Bitch I'm Generation X, I didn't frick up shite.

So whiny. And so quick to blame others instead of taking some responsibility for your own actions.

And you wonder why people are annoyed at millennials.

I take responsibility for myself, plenty. I survive on my own and please, please tell me about "whining" when there's a thread a day blaming millennials for everything wrong with today's world.

Gramps? I'm late gen X, but nevermind that. It's obvious you are bent out of shape about something so I digress because I'm in no mood to argue and I have to be up for 5:30 to go to work in the morning..

Step 1 - get a job
Step 2 - quit being a pussy
Step 3 - get promoted because you work hard and you're not a pussy. Likely to find better work because you are employed. And you have REFERENCES and EXPERIENCE.

Getting it? Oh, but not being a pussy isn't in your field. Well, you're fricked.

Well that is because the millennial generation is one of the most annoying/obnoxious generations. It's easy to pick on them.

Cool, shite I already know and learned from my parents. I live by myself, work hard, just got another raise and I'm more of a man than you could ever be, but I'll let you huddle up with your boys here on this message board like a big, bad man that I'm sure you are.

How long ago did your parents off themselves?

OP: It's subjective, depends on the kid and what field they're in.

I have friends whose kid came back home with a Princeton diploma and it took a year of being at home and kinda looking then the kid got a great job and has taken off and never looked back.

I think the general consensus is as long as your kid isn't laying around not doing shite they can stay at home.

Also charging your kid rent is a dick move. As long as they help our around the house, let them save some money.

I just don't understand. The day I graduated high school, I was out. I couldn't stand living at home and not being able to do what I wanted. Never looked back.

I was the same way.. but the world has changed a lot, even just in the last 15 or 20 yrs.. back then, there were A LOT more good -paying union jobs to be had-- nowadays, it almost seems like 'union' has become a dirty word.. there are still pockets of the country where young people can get a good job at a plant or something.. but not nearly as many of them as there used to be.. so reality dictates that, in 2017, sometimes kids must move back home after school.
