What is the best form to use to swim a long distance?

Like to swim across a lake or something. For me I think swimming on back but I kick legs straight out to push the water. But seems like most people swim on their stomachs that do this?

Crawfish seem to move pretty good. So probably backwards

I would say backstroke, because you can alternately stop kicking or using your arms to rest or save energy as necessary. also, your face is always out of the water, so you don't have to deal with that when trying to breathe.

Alternate freestyle and backstroke

Pretty sure my Boy Scout manual said to use the side-crawl stroke if I was ever tasked with swimming across a large body of water.
Back stroke is pretty low intensity too (if you can handle the thought of a gator swimming up from underneath unbeknownst to you!)

Never leave anything for the swim back.

If my body is 80% water, I figure I only need to use 20% more to swim!

Backstroke is not a good idea: you can't see where you're going. And if you're swimming a long distance, you don't want to get off course.
From what I've seen, most distance swimmers use freestyle.

I swam a mile at boy scout camp when I was 11, and I think I used all of them. The body/mind needs to change strokes in order to stay on point and focused.

Have a predator chasing you.

Free is definitely faster and back would be relaxed if you're not in shape for the distance. Best bet is mostly free and alternating to back for rest breaks.
