Back in the 70's before LSU home games there was a restaurant on Government St, about 4-5 blocks(maybe more) from downtown that was the place to go.
It had an oyster bar and a tv(s) up on the wall. For the life of me I can't remember the name. throw some names out that I might recognize.
Took a ride up and down Govn't st a few years ago and didn't see anything that I could have remembered. hope you all can help.

Had the dessert in the jewelry display at the hostess stand. Great oysters, spaghetti and meatballs, fried shrimp and a killer ribeye. Grew up eating there and miss it. Now the White Market or whatever that food court will be called is being built on the site.
His brother owned Suburban Garden restaurant in Alexandria for many years as well.
White Star Market

Just found this article:
If you wanted really good, Southern-style Italian food, or fried seafood po-boys served with a beer or a soft drink in a big frosty mug, Giamanco’s was your place. South Baton Rouge natives went there with such frequency, most of the regular wait staff knew customers by name, and families reserved the spacious back-rooms for birthdays and special occasion meals. The restaurant closed in the early 2000s, much to the dismay of its patrons, and the building was demolished, though the slab still stands, reminding many of favorite meals of yesteryear.
Doesn't say it was on Government St though.

It was and the building was knocked down at least 10-12 years ago. Now the place I mentioned above is being built on the site. I ate there all of my childhood and early adulthood until they closed.

What's your definition of a city "block"?
Giamancos was like 30 "from downtown" as I understand the term.

I miss Giamancos.
Someone here mentioned Shings the other day. I'd totally forgotten about it but it's another restaurant I miss. Where do you go for the best buffet in town? Shiiiiiings!

Yep. Giamanco's. We used to go there all of the time. Pretty good Italian food and a great oyster bar.

A friend of mine decided to be an a-hole and go to Shing's and not get the buffet. Instead, he asked for a menu. Said the menu they brought him had cobwebs on it.

Yup, it was Giamanco's. I used to work there in the 90's. I Was actually working during the OJ Simpson, White Bronco chase. They had it playing on all of the TV's in the Bar.
