Miss South Africa caused controversy by wearing gloves at charity event
quote:
Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, 22, handed out food to orphans with HIV at soup kitchen
quote:
The model was criticised online for 'not wanting to touch black children'
quote:
One user on Twitter wrote: ‘Someone balance me real quick. Why is Miss South Africa wearing gloves? Where the gloves necessary? Please explain.’
quote:
Another wrote: ‘Not convinced you deserve to be Miss South Africa feeding orphans wearing gloves, ayi Shame.’
quote:
But in a video message released on Twitter, Miss Nel-Peters said her intentions were misread and she apologised for any offence caused.
She said: ‘I just want to clear something up. All the volunteers on site wore gloves because we were told it was the right thing to do while working with food and we were handing out food to young kids.
quote:
‘That was our only intention with wearing the gloves; to be as hygienic as possible. I really feel that my intentions were completely misunderstood.
quote:
‘To me, the moral of the story today is that 300 kids got a proper, warm lunch and they got that with or without gloves, so I am a bit sad my intentions were taken completely wrong and I can only apologise if I offended anybody.’
quote:
Her explanation only prompted more mocking on social media, with the hashtag #MissSAchallenge used by many Twitter users who fashioned gloves to carry out everyday tasks.
One Twitter user photographed themselves wearing latex gloves while using a keyboard, with the message ‘hygiene 1st’ while another put plastic sweet wrappers over their fingers while reading a textbook, quipping ‘studying can be hard when you have to consider hygiene’.

All that racism, y'all!

If they have HIV, their immune systems are very weak. She probably just didn't want to spread anything to them because if she did and they died because of it, she'd be getting slammed for that too.
frick this world. And frick Miss South Africa

That would hurt if she was giving out handys. Other than that, I see no problem with this.

Sometimes I believe that Twitter is a herald of the apocalypse.

What should be sad and what people need to have a problem with. Is these horrible adults just fricking and having kids when they cannot even feed themselves. I dont blame her for wearing gloves. Atleast she is there feeding them. Wtf are these people doing that are so "upset"?? on their phones crying some faux outrage bullshite.

So it has to be a race issue and not a HIV issue....right.

Welp that just depressed the living hell out of me. Seeing orphaned children with HIV is very, very sobering. If that is what they got from those pics then something is definitely wrong with them. She may have been doing it for a photo op or whatever, but she is still there doing something.

It's funny because if she was black this wouldn't be a story.

frick the Daily Mail for deeming this "news". the overwhelming majority of people have no problem with an individual of any race wearing gloves to handle food of all things. this isn't news. this is a few thousand mouth breathers being outraged over someone making a bigger difference in the world than them

Wearing plastic gloves while serving food is standard in many kitchens. These people are looking for any reason to be hateful. Pathetic.

And I'd share hiv with her
This just makes me realize I'm not doing enough with my life. I used to volunteer for NOAIDS taskforce but haven't done anything this year. I need to reach out.
