Any of you fellers that had LASIK surgery long ago had to start wearing reading glasses yet? Especially those older than 35 years old?

Doc told me as soon as I got the surgery my nearsightedness would go away but I'd have to wear glasses to read (which isn't a bad thing).

So I figured I'd ask some folks who already had the surgery.

They made me fill out a form which said I was going to need reading glasses.

I don't wear reading glasses but I feel like I need regular glasses again. I had it about 8 yrs ago.

Both of my parents had radial keratotomy back in the early 90's. It took about twenty years but both ended up needing reading glasses. It's no big deal though; they can get by with those cheap ones you buy in the store.

I had it around 10 years ago. I've just started to need reading glasses in the last six months. I'm a man. I'm 50.

I had one eye remain slightly nearsighted this helped me avoid reading glasses until my mid 50s. Since the Docs are having people sign papers about needing reading glasses at a later date, it seems that a lot of people did not understand that LASIK only corrects refractive errors caused by incorrect shape of the eye's lens. Needing reading glasses as you age is because the muscles used to change the focal range of your eye get weak, LASIK does nothing to prevent this.

after about 10 years "many" people have bad vision again.

the problem is they cant do it again, you can only do it once in your life and that is it.

often you can go back to glasses if you are lucky but in my case I cant. the only way I can see good again is to wear glasses and contacts at the same time (special made $600 contacts at that) and then I can ONLY see at a fixed distance about 20 ft in front of me for driving.

I am blind as far as being able to read anything, I cant tell if its a man or woman im looking at if they are closer the 15 ft or more the 25 ft away. in short I see worse with glasses and contacts except for a set distance within about 10 feet where I can see 20/20

for the most part I am "less blind" without the glasses and special contacts, by just seeing everything blurry all the time and I use reading glasses for reading. I am legally blind in right eye and the left eye isn't too bad but its not 20 vision, its more like 50 vision with blurry edges and no fine detail.

I would never do it if I could go back, as bad as my vision used to be, and it was pretty thick lenses, I could still see everything 20/20 at any distance and read well with them

I had it done in 2002...have to wear reading glasses, but 20/20 otherwide. Great tradeoff for 20/400 in both eyes...

Yes, they can be. Not across the board, but LASIK does not correct that.

Does it cause it though? No.

I don't understand this. Did you mean to say "and" instead of "but?"

If you have LASIK, your eyes will see virtually the same as they do with your contacts in right now. So, if you're having trouble seeing up close now, then you likely will after LASIK too. As someone suggested, you could see if you can tolerate monovision (one eye sees distance clearly, one eye sees near clearly) and potentially have the LASIK done in this fashion. The downside to it is a loss of depth perception because you'll only see with one eye at a time regardless of what you're doing.

Mr. CT has LASIK because he was tired of wearing glasses. Now he cusses daily because he cannot see shite up close . . . and now he just wears glasses for a different reason.

Keep in mind, the problems aren't related. The Lasik removes the (generally myopic level) nearsightedness. The focal "flexibility" that comes as you age would have happened, regardless, and you would have needed bifocals even if you didn't have Lasik.

43 yrs old. Had Lasik last year. Went from bifocals to 20/20, but the doc told me to expect to eventually need reading glasses as I age.

Wish I had done it years ago.

Singer told me it would happen, and it did, but it was not too bad until I turned 50. I was 44/45 when I had the lasik.
