Amazon’s long been a go-to for people to online price compare while shopping at brick-and-mortars. Now, a new patent granted to the company could prevent people from doing just that inside Amazon’s own stores.

The patent, titled “Physical Store Online Shopping Control,” details a mechanism where a retailer can intercept network requests like URLs and search terms that happen on its in-store Wi-Fi, then act upon them in various ways.

Appears to only be valid when using Amazon's in-store WiFi. So there is some relief for those that are worried about privacy.

How the hell can they be allowed to patent URL rewriting/redirecting?

Just don't use their in store wifi.

Simply can't see the attraction of an Amazon store anyway, they're only relevant due to online/shipping to me.

They should be able to do whatever they want to their own wifi. Don't use it and you could view whatever you want.

This seems like a pointless idea. I don't need to connect to a store's wifi if I wanted to check prices on my phone.

Screw Amazon.

I thought hovering flight vehicles were going to bring us all of our rubber dog shite purchases. Just wait until the price of refined fuel starts moving back up. There is a reason only really wealthy people own and operate helicopters.

Some places don't accept Amazon for their price match.

I tried to do it at best buy once and they said Amazon doesn't count.

Not so fast, sometimes the best way to prevent someone from doing something you don't want to do is to patent the idea to ensure it doesn't happen unless you give someone approval. For example, since Amazon has this patent, this would prevent Wal-Mart or Target from setting up this system in their stores unless Amazon gives them permission to do it. I think this might be more of a patent to deal with possible business threats than it is a patent for something they plan to implement.

Seems easy enough to work around....

Why the hell would you go to a brick and mortar Amazon store? The whole point is to sit back on my couch and get what I need so I don't have to rub elbows with the people of WalMart.

Isn't this hypocritical and against the free market principles that allowed them to be such a massive success?

Sounds like an opportunity for me to patent a way to get around it.

This would violate net neutrality, but I don't know if non-ISPs are asked to adhere to NN.
