Amazon is offering a discount on its Prime membership for people who receive government assistance such as food stamps or WIC.
The program allows those with a valid Electronic Benefits Transfer, or EBT, cards to access Amazon Prime for $5.99 a month for one year. The regular annual membership fee is $99 a year, or $10.99 a month if paid in installments.
"We designed this membership option for customers receiving government assistance to make our everyday selection and savings more accessible, including the many conveniences and entertainment benefits of Prime," said Greg Greeley, Vice President of Amazon Prime.

So now I'm subsidizing welfare recipients though the private market? Great.

A private company's customers may care about the actions of the company

Amazon going hard after Wal-Mart's business. They want to be able to ship groceries to them.
Posted on 6/6/17 at 10:08 am to Palmetto08
So why not just charge everyone $5.99?

Price discrimination, and it's perfectly legal.

Then don't do business with them. Simple as that.

If you are so fricking poor, lazy, doped-up, etc ... that you have to get free food ... then how the frick do you afford the internet?
Or ... do you just go to McDs or the public library to use free wifi and order shite from Prime?

Private business, they can do what they want.
On a side note, if you oppose businesses that seem to try and get all the money they can out of WIC/EBT users, like Walmart, you should object to this move as well, since it promotes spending money that these individuals do not have.
Like I said though, Amazon can do what they want.

Even more evidence that I'm a damn sucker for working and paying my own way in life.

So they are probably enticing customers who may not be likely to have a membership, AND with their expansion into grocery ordering and delivery, getting those customers on food stamps makes sense. And if those prices are cheaper, then that's a net good anyways.

Eh, Dollar General is a lot better, Cuz you don't have to get all dressed up like you do when you're going to Walmart

I wonder is people will start dropping if they raise membership prices again while still discounting the poor.

I don't blame these companies for trying to get every penny of welfare out of customers that they can. Just like I don't blame colleges for accepting every pile of shite student who has a pell grant and a guaranteed student loan even though virtually no one thinks that pile of shite has a chance of receiving a a degree and becoming a productive member of society.
I solely blame the voters who have allowed that system to take root in this country for that nonsense.
