What off-season moves make the Pelicans contenders in 17-18?

Came across this article/blog on Reddit... Nothing earth-shattering, but it was a pretty good read.
Much of what the author covered has been discussed here. Still, it's new Pels content at a time when all NBA news is focused on the finals.
The author defined "success" and being a contender as winning a minimum of 50 regular season games and getting a 3-6 playoff seed.

I mean, if that is being a contender then there are plenty of paths that could get them there
But in this era, that is totally rewriting the intention of the word "contender"
A contender is a team that has a chance to contend for a title. There is literally nothing the Pelicans can do to be a contender in the true sense of the word

Only about 4 teams for the foreseeable future.

We have two top tenish players and we aren't a contender. That's a weird thought. But reality.

Boogie and AD would have to go on an insane run plus have savvy reliable vets aka 2011 Mavs.

The 2011 Mavs would be swept. Outliers like that ain't happening any time soon

Contenders as in NBA Finals? Or deep into the playoffs like conference finals?

We have two elite athletic big men that can not be truly beutralized by small ball. I think with the right coaching the team can be a lot more dangerous than expected.
Cousins and Davis have the ability to completely dominate the paint with the right coaching. That is dominating the rebounding, forcing opponents into lower percentage shots, and causing foul trouble early for their opponents. I understand that the trend is to focus on perimeter players, but the Pelicans have two of the only players that can attack the flaws of those systems.
The Pelicans need to bring Jrue back and they need elite 3 pt shooting (possible) and solid perimeter defense from Jrue and the other role players. Cousins and Davis can do the rest. There is a front court that should be able to stop them in the NBA from imposing their will if they are coached correctly.

Conley, Gasol, and zbo have annoyed teams for years. I don't understand why this team cannot, you have the hardest 3 pieces to find... Now you need to the find the Tony Allen and Vince carters

Just give me some perimeter offense and some decent role players.
(cough cough JJ Reddick)

JJ, George Hill, or Patty Mills. Sign 2 if possible.

Hope KD breaks his legs so bad he has to retire. Short of that the only real contender in the west are the Warriors for the foreseeable future.

I am not saying the Pels will be title contenders in the next five years, but I also don't think it'll be limited to just the Warriors and Cavs either. By 2020, I think the Warriors will have to blow it up because I don't care who you are, you're not going to want to pay a $300m tax bill.
Assuming the Pels can keep both Boogie and AD by that point (pretty huge if) then they could be a top 3 team in the west. However, they just as is easily be back in the lottery trying to find their next big thing too.

And Conley, Gasol, and Zbo in their primes would have gotten demolished by these Warriors
Looking to the past is not the answer, as the past never had a team like these Warriors
The Cavs are unreal- second best player of all time, just went 12-1 with the best offensive playoff rating of all time and they are about to lose in 4 or 5 by an average margin of 15+ in all likelihood
Warriors will only get better as they get more cohesive, and now they will have the MLE for other ring chasers too every year.
Not beating them. Gotta be happy winning the SW-- which I think is realistic in the next 2-3 years

That 5-10% chance of contention that you gave is a path that I'd like to pursue, get some one season fill ins, swing hard for a John Wall type in the next season or two. May or may not get it, but it's something that could make them a contender of sorts (whatever that means).
What I'm intrigued with, and what I'd try to sell a John Wall on, provided the prior season went reasonably well, is a chance to make history. Sell him on a shot to be part of a team that takes the next big step in the NBA, flying in the face of conventional small ball. The team could become a terror/dark horse, or could be another Memphis, but the potential is so tantalizing I'd think that a star guard/wing might give it a crack.

Yeah, that is the one shot. Everyone gets tired of the Warriors winning and another super team forms and those guys look to Boogie and the Brow
Which is why I have no desire to re-sign Jrue

History tells us that in this era, it isn't sustainable. Injuries happen, feuds happen, anything can happen.
And the lux tax catches up to everyone. Teams falter. It happens to everyone, including the Warriors. Curry has glass ankles, KD has a bad foot, Draymond is a ticking time bomb, and Klay could get frustrated in his role.
Just make the best team we can.

Yeah, the goal shouldn't be getting John Wall or Paul George. It should be getting as good as you can without adding unmovable contracts. Become a top 4 seed team first then the other great player that is tired of getting blown out in the first round will want to join AD/DC. And it may not be the top level guys. It'd be the ones right below them that don't qualify for the new extensions. Has Lillard made any All NBA teams? If not then probably someone like him is who we're talking about. Or maybe Gasol finally succumbs to age in a few years and The Grizzlies decide to blow it up making Conley available.

that's a hell of a limb you're on there. the Warriors and Cavs would obliterate the Pels by going small. Davis can't guard Durant or LeBron. Cousins can't guard Draymond or Love. i'd say they would be neutralized fairly well on defense.
it is an interesting experiment the Pels are about to embark on for the next year (hopefully longer). the fundamental question is can high usage, scoring big man led his team to a top tier offense, let alone greatness in the modern NBA? it's not apparent that is the case and now the Pels have two guys used to being the center of gravity for their teams.
can it work? absolutely, but it's not as easy as "right coaching" there are legit questions that go beyond "coach dumb"
