re: Member Theresa May's brilliant move to call a snap election?

Agreed. I just take issue with the idea that this election is a repudiation of Brexit. Especially when the DUP is still for Brexit (albeit a careful or soft one due to their shared border with Ireland) and the facts that Cameron and May both campaigned against Brexit before the referendum. This is much more about May not working hard to secure votes and people questioning her leadership. She has been hit hard after the recent terror attacks and failed to respond well. She also backed out of the debates. She was a weak candidate.
quote:
Arlene Foster, the DUP leader, is keen to avoid a hard border with Ireland and has spoken against a "hard Brexit." She has said: “No-one wants to see a ‘hard’ Brexit, what we want to see is a workable plan to leave the European Union, and that’s what the national vote was about – therefore we need to get on with that. “However, we need to do it in a way that respects the specific circumstances of Northern Ireland, and, of course, our shared history and geography with the Republic of Ireland.

So having your cake and eating it too?

It was almost like May heard Hillary Clinton boasting about what a crappy campaign she ran and announced "hold my beer and watch this".
This should have been a slam dunk for the Tories. Not only did they have all the momentum going into the election but the face of Labour is a guy who can't go ten minutes without talking about how swell Hugo Chavez was and how Venezuela really is the model for the UK to follow.

quote:Not really since it's basically a Brexit in name only for people who wanted Brexit in order to accomplish a specific policy goal (bankers who wanted London to deregulate, EDL types who want to keep the wogs out). A soft Brexit is mostly symbolic. They'd even still have to make EU budget payments.
So having your cake and eating it too?
Ultimately it's an indication that the UK didn't think things through but doesn't want to admit it.

The dementia tax debacle (got dementia? after you die, the government will take your house!) was much more important than the terror attacks.

Yes it was.
She came out for it then had to reverse it. There were other things too. Winter fuel allowances. Her cuts in police were hammered, especially after the terror attacks. Corbyn and Labour hit her hard repeatedly and she never really responded.
She never seemed to have any urgency over this. It's as if she almost felt that she was entitled to a good result.

Agreed, and most people in the US are unaware of what this was about.
Most brit voters really didn't know who Theresa May was before this election, so they projected their own ideals on to her. Then the election happened, they see her campaign, flip flop on some horrendous ideas, bungle the manifesto entirely, hide from the debate, learn how bad she was a Home Sec, and began to see her as arrogant.
While Gove will never be PM, I hope people hear him out again about detoxification of the Conservative Party.

Maybe, just maybe, the dream team of Crosby and Messina isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Northern Ireland is going to be getting all sorts of goodies.

It never really mattered if they lost seats or not. The Ulster Unionists would always be there to shore up the Tories.
The cold hard truth for Labour is, this was their shot and because Corbyn is their Leader, they never had a chance in hell.

Crosby should have been kicked to the side of the curb after the London election

No. This is wrong. DUP was treated like a pariah and nobody really ever had this in the back of their mind. This DUP alliance is a desperate times/desperate measures type of thing. It must be remembered that DUP has strong terrorist ties. This is also huge in messing up the peace process (now the UK government can't say they are impartial). Also, DUP is anti-homosexual and is now causing friction with a resurgent Scot Conservative Party led by a lesbian veteran. Need I remind you, that it was Ruth Davidsons (the lesbian) leadership in Scotland that saved the Tories last night. If it wasn't for her, the Tories would have fared much worse.
This is a very tenuous alliance. One that was never seen as a fallback.

And Trump is a liberal. Just admit it.
I still can't believe you're doubling down on this and repeating it like it's true.
Trump assembled the most conservative cabinet ever in American history and has been slashing the frick out of regulations everywhere. He's going all in on repealing obamacare and getting tax cuts done. Trump is also the most pro American energy and Pro oil and gas president we've ever seen.
Even Mitch McConnell has said that aside from stark differences in foreign policy, President Donald Trump is turning out to be no different than what we could've had with President Jeb Bush or President Marco Rubio.

Bitter Never Trumpers like you are just sad and pathetic right now.

This is some poor trolling from you.

Did she hire David Vitter's campaign manager?

Also, the DUP caused Stormont to collapse back in January due to Foster being corrupt as frick. They lost their majority in Stormont in the resultant elections for the first time, and Sinn Fein is having a great time fricking things up, even getting some respect from anti-SF Republicans. There's probably going to have to be more elections in the O6 in a few months because of that, unless the Tories put a shite-ton of pressure on Foster to get something hammered out quickly to get that distraction out of the way.

Like you said it's a repudiation of May, not Brexit.
