Time to trim the fat and cut programs we can't afford

Agreed, which is why I would like to raise the GPA/ACT requirement for TOPS to 3.0/24. That would cut the cost of the program in half while keeping the purpose of it, to allow students who otherwise would have no chance to afford college but are capable of earning a degree if given a shot, intact.

I agree with you.

Just love the hypocrisy of all these conservatives who constantly bitch about entitlement programs blow their collective gaskets when an entitlement program they use is on the chopping block.

Agreed, but often the deal with entitlements is that we like what we like and don't like what we don't like for different reasons.

Some people are Federalists and see any entitlement at the federal level as being unconstitutional. However, they would be fine with an even more obtrusive and lucrative program existing at the state level.

Some are fiscally minded pragmatists. They see entitlements as necessary, but poorly structured and executed. They believe that entitlements need to be curbed or reformed to cut down on waste and abuse in order to make them sustainable for future generations.

Some believe in honoring commitments. They see entitlements as consideration in a contract between the government and voters. They paid taxes and worked their whole lives to earn their benefits, so they see any reduction of that as government not living up to their end of the bargain.

Finally, some conservatives are libertarian free market capitalists and see entitlement programs, or any government intrusion into the market place, as inherently wasteful and inefficient. They believe all entitlements should be dismantled at all levels, along with all regulation on business and most forms of taxation, and that the private sector and private charity will come together to provide for all of those in need.

So, you see, often times, what seems hypocritical on the surface is actually quite morally and intellectually consistent depending on one's point of view and political/economic philosophy.

I've worked with a felon before. Not that hard to find a job if they really want one.

Yeah. Let's let them starve because they can't get a job above minimum wage and give them a reason to commit more crimes

Let's at least admit there is a substantive difference between the state investing in its best and brightest with the hopes that they stay in Louisiana and progress the state forward compared to a program that has shown to actually further generational poverty.

It's like someone who is cheap investing $10,000 in a business and getting a 7% return versus dumping gasoline on that same $10,000 and lighting it on fire.

Just wondering can a felon be approved for an OSHA card. There had to be a lot of crappy plant jobs out there that pay decent money.

In my profession I am shocked how many convicts get SSI. It is ridiculous.

OSHA doesn't do a background check so it's not an issue. TWIC does do a extensive background check and certain felonies will exclude you such as crimes involving a gun, explosives, or terroristic crimes. Maybe all violent crimes too but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

I tend to agree. Who is the man to stop me from cooking and selling meth? How dare I be considered a felon if I want to make a living selling heroin. I think all drugs should be legal that way the trash will weed themselves out by overdosing.

That's not how it works

I get being against food stamps for felons but TOPS is a total drain on the state education system. There is no way that a kid with a 2.75 high school GPA and a 23 ACT score deserves state money. LSU and other Louisiana schools would be in so much better shape if they changed it to something that was actually somewhat difficult and used the TOPS money to improve facilities and teacher to student ratios.
