11-year-old girl overdosed on heroin Wednesday in Beechview, surrounded by photos of friends and posters plastered on her bedroom walls.

The sixth-grader at South Hills Middle School was found unresponsive in her home in the 2300 block of Palm Beach Avenue just before 6 p.m.

A family member performed CPR on the girl, who was breathing when paramedics arrived. The paramedics then administered Narcan, a drug that blocks opioids, and revived her. She regained consciousness, became combative and had to be sedated.

quote:

The girl’s mother was visibly distraught at the scene of the overdose, first responders said, and claimed she didn’t know about the girl’s drug use. The family lives on a quiet street containing single-family homes.

Opioid overdoses are skyrocketing in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. So far this year, at least 74 people have died from suspected overdoses in the city, according to police, compared to 130 in all of 2016. Across Allegheny County, 613 people died from overdoses in 2016.

Happy they revived her, but that's awful for all involved.

It really is, thank god we have an AG who will crack down on recreational weed and get to the bottom of the problem.

I've got an 11 yo daughter this hits close to home. Most kids that age are scared shiteless of needles. Gotta be some really bad parenting going on here IMO.

I just assume every fricked up story is Florida, so combined with "palm beach avenue," I was very confused when I got to

1) how does an 11 year old afford heroin?

2) what kind of fricked up person even sells to an 11 year old?

I was hoping after reading the headline that it was stolen from a parent or something, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Jesus H. Christ

Worse than the cocaine epidemic...and harder to catch before use.

Jesus! I have a niece (well, a close friend's child but I consider her a niece) who just turned 11.. She is in the 6th grade.

I couldn't imagine something like this happening to her. How does an 11 year old get heroin? I know its not hard to find, but who is helping an 11 year old get it? Thinking back to when I was in middle school, marijuana wasn't hard to get. There was 1 or 2 people that got busted with crack on them so I guess it isn't that difficult for an 11 year old to get.. Either way, it is still a disturbing thought.

I'm curious as to how she was taking it as well. Also, interested to know where and how she got it.

When I was 11, we would hear about high schoolers who were busted for weed and kicked out of school. At the time, I thought that was a serious crime that only some suicidal maniac would commit. "Their parents are going to literally kill them. What if they turn them into the police? They won't get into college."

Now 11 year olds are shooting up H.

WTF.

So was this an accidental OD or a suicide attempt?

The whole article up to the last paragraph had me thinking accidental OD but the last paragraph asks what she had to escape from which to me insinuates suicide....unless they are saying that the euphoria of drug use takes you away from your real world problems which could be the case but I'm not sure an 11 yr old (especially one that lives in the suburbs of Pittsburgh) would use drugs for that reason.

To me the reason an 11 yr old uses drugs is because they've seen someone do it that makes them think it is cool.

I think a long hard look needs to be taken at the parents, neighborhood, school, etc. The whole shebang. This is really fricked up.

This isn't the 50s anymore, Frank. Kids aren't bopping anymore. They're banging each other and doing methods before they hit grade school. We're called Chemical Toilet and that's that.

Take the money from the war on drugs and turn it over to rehab and eduation. Interdiction does not work.

What kind of low motherfricker would give or sell heroin to an 11yo? Hope they find the person and make a serious example of them.
