Did You Know There Are Two Irelands? (European Smugness Anecdote)

Just had breakfast with an Irish journalist staying at my bed and breakfast in Rome. She apparently is researching Italian politics for the Financial Times, which threw me off because it is printed in London.
When she mentioned that she was from Ireland, I nodded and said although I had never been there, I had traveled throughout the rest of the UK, and had served overseas with UK army and naval officers on several occasions.
I could tell she was not impressed. When I later Wiki'd 'Ireland' I was shocked to see that 'Ireland' proper and its relationship with the UK is a point of contention...
In fact, the UK Ireland makes up about 10% or less of the Irish landmass.
I felt bad, but then I remembered how she started our conversation: She asked me where I was from, and I told her New Orleans. She then immediately said 'oh yes, that's where they had the storm...George W Bush didn't do anything about that, did he?"
Even if that's true, I will never understand the European smugness when it comes to their judging our politics.

Yes there is the Republic of Ireland and the six counties of Northern Ireland which is part of the UK.
Her smugness was probably due to her realization that you are a dumbass.

You didn't know there are two different Irelands? are you 18?

Yes, I did know there were two Ireland's. But I have visited both. It's interesting to look up the differences between the U.K., Great Britain, England, and the British Isles. Most people don't know the difference

Holy crap you are an embarrassment.

Northern Ireland just wanted religious tolerance from the oppressive Catholic Irish regime that treated Protestantism like a crime. The Catholics were bombing Protestant churches on the regular. Eventually with a little help from mother England, Northern Ireland gained their freedom from Southern Ireland
