Charter schools and teachers.

But if you do your job as a parent, your kid will succeed even in LA public schools.
I know a kid who is brilliant. Despite great testing scores, he didn't get into BRHS as Freshman and ended up at Istrouma. He was supposed to be in Algebra II but the Adminstration couldn't get his scheduling right. He sat in a Spanish class for no reason until November then was finally moved into the correct math. Despite getting an A, he couldn't receive credit because he missed too many classes because they couldn't get the schedule right.
Explain how incompetence at the level can be overcome.

I'm a huge proponent for raising teaching standards if you improve the pay as well.
Most education degrees are equivalent to a general studies degree

SPED...by eating up funding, limiting the teachers ability to effectively teach the non-SPED students, and creating untouchable assholes that are immediate drains on society.
Can't upvote or agree with you enough.

- the teachers
Many great teachers in this state. However, maybe just as many lazy ones, especially older ones, who are coasting by. Despite Common Core, they continue to stick to their old ways, old methods. These are the ones that have given the same tests 20 years in a row, copying it so many times that the print is faded and hard to read. With no real ability to fire a teacher, we end up with many bad ones. Low pay doesn't help either.

- the administration
I think this is the biggest problem. My wife is a HS teacher and from what I can tell, being a teacher and being an administrator are two completely different skill sets. Yet... every administrator is required to have 3 years experience. What makes one a good teacher doesn't make one a good administrator.
Also, administrators who are "beloved" and have been a principal forever, yet are also coasting and not adopting to the needs of schools today.

No real issues here, except I think the schools could do more to educate parents about Common Core methods.

Is an absolute joke here in LA. When we moved to Texas for a few years, despite my wife being fully certified in LA, she had to take all new certification tests, because TX basically laughed at an LA certification.

- testing
This isn't LA specific so I don't think is a complaint per se about LA education. However, I think testing is well-intentioned but terrible in reality.

Main problem is the system. We are afraid to let kids that fail, actually fail. We just lower the bar.
No kid left behind is an obnoxious policy.

Parents of students suck is my main complaint.

I agree several students should have failed but we promote them because we hope they"get it"

John White
He was brought in to set up Common Core. Once the backlash began, he had no clue. So the entire state is rudderless, for the foreseeable future

To many students where both parents are from Louisiana.

the quality of students
and
how the system is geared to help the shitty students and not help the elite students. i understand the egalitarian and welfare aspects of the policy, but it's still backwards (and our macro results show this year after year)

Most public schools in Louisiana suck. But most public schools in the USA suck because the Dept of Education is a fricked up bureaucracy.

About ten percent of my students are SPED and I don't have an aid. Imagine a class of 30 kids... 5 of them highly intelligent and 5 of them with modifications. Teaching those kids is like teaching calculus to a garden gnome. How can I possibly read tests aloud when I have 25 other students who want me to shut the hell up so they can take their tests? It's an injustice to every student in that class. Plus...the parents. Oh, the parents. I teach about 150 students and get like 3 parents during parent/teacher days. I try to call parents when I have issues with a child and..."we're sorry, but this number has been disconnected." The problem with Louisiana education is that our government has created a society of entitled crybabies and they are rewarded for producing children out of wedlock. There is no accountability.
