The Black Hills/Badlands of South Dakota

I can't believe I hadn't been before this weekend, because there is an unprecedented amount of things to do, whether you like the outdoors or not.

Hot Springs
Wind Cave NP
Jewel Cave
Minuteman
Wounded Knee
Crazy Horse
Ice Cave
Custer State Park (WHY isn't this a national park?)
Mount Rushmore
Badlands NP
Wall Drug
Spearfish Canyon
Deadwood - awesome mining town turned gambling Mecca with tons of history, plus they named a popular tv show after

I could go on...

Nowhere in America is there this much diversity in attractions than what lies in the Black Hills.

Blackhills are great. Sort of a Colorado before it got popular. Being held up by bison crossing the road in Custer is pretty awesome.

I'd love to get up there.

I was going to suggest Big Bend. When thinking of Texas, a lot of people think vast spaces, the hill country, or the metropolis of Dallas/Houston/Austin.

I've found most people are unaware of Emory Peak and Big Bend.

I need to know more. I actually have a massive project across SD the next 18 months. I will need to be in Sioux Falls 1-2 days a month so I am wondering if it makes sense to travel from there to the badlands one weekend.

I've been thinking of going there this summer. Looks like some beautiful country. Right now I'm trying to decide between going there or New Mexico.

While the UP is nice, especially around Pictured Rocks, it's not the Black Hills.

I hear nothing but good things about both of them. I definitely wanna go there. With Black Hills and Badlands along with Mount Rushmore, they have some pretty nice monuments/parks that are located in South Dakota.

I have been all over this area of South Dakota on a motorcycle while going to Sturgis for many years. It is beautiful and very picturesque. Some of the nicest people I have ever met.

Thinking of taking a summer trip and sort of thinking of places.
Thinking of something new. A mix of family entertainment, history, sight seeing, etc.

Thinking New England, extreme north Midwest, or no Cal, Pacific Northwest.

Any suggestions.
I've been to New England before

Black Hills are definitely a good choice for underrated. Fantastic place that gets overlooked for other more popular areas just to the west.

Definitely not underrated, Texans won't shut up about it.

Look no other than the Black Hills.

Your kids would love the mammoth museum. It's in hot springs, south of wind cave.

I immediately broke a sweat and smacked a mosquito. Western North Carolina is much better.

PNW,
Doing more homework it appears as though Rapid City would be a good place to stay. Do you have other suggestions?
The Alexander Jones Hotel looks pretty nice and not far from Mount Rushmore and other attractions.

Tell me more about the area.
Thanks

Wallawa Mountains in Eastern Oregon.

Underrated? I would venture to say a good percentage of people have never heard of them. They are beautiful - aka "The Alps of Oregon".
