Moving the BR Zoo
1. Need more studies.
Yup.. Still PLENTY of taxpayer money to be handed out to political doners in the form of "Studies".
Just use the Baton Rouge Loop as exhibit "A", Many people have gotten wealthy on studying that MFer.

The vet school has the equipment to operate on large animals when they are sick or injured
And?
If they build a new zoo by burbank or wherever, it will have its own hospital area.
The zoo uses the mri machine huh. How many animals have they run mris on?
The year I was there we brought 1 animal to the vet school and it was dead. All other procedures were done on sight, which was a very small amount.
The idea that the zoo needs to be by the vet school for its equipment and on hands training for the students is at the very bottom of the totem pole. If a procedure needs to be done on an animal, ok yea I could see the students watching the vet but that's all I could see happening.

I actually think it is overall in good shape, and on par with comparable Zoo's of its size.
Unless it's improved immensely since my last trip there about ten years ago, I don't agree with this at all. It was pathetic.

You're thinking about what HAS been done in your experience.
Think of what COULD be done. Just because the shitty BR zoo hasn't taken advantage of the vet school doesn't mean they shouldn't.

If you can take care of the animals on site, why would you bring them elsewhere?
Now yea if the connection(zoo/vet) was exposure to local schools and groups and more along those lines, yea that relationship would be great.

It's far from the interstate, and it's far from its customer base
The zoo is 10 minutes from I-110.
It is far from its customer base, but it is a destination type place. People make plans and go if they want to go. They go there if there is something to see, if there's nothing worth seeing they don't go.
And the study as I remember it had three plans; the current site, the Fairgrounds site and the site at Nicholson and Bluebonnet. They study concluded that renovating the old zoo would cost about the same as a new zoo. At the time I said no way.
Look at the alternate sites. One flooded and is on the edge of the parish. The other site is a long way from the interstate and is almost outside of the parish.
I think the people doing the study cooked the books. I think a new zoo would cost way more than renovations would cost unless like the elephant pen everything is out dated and they want to reinvent the wheel.
I can see why BREC wants everything new. It's not their money they are spending, its ours.

I remember reading an article that stated the new zoo would be ready much sooner than a full renovation of the old zoo and that was a big element in costs being closer together than you would think.

To be honest, I think the zoo should just shut down. Outside of high-end zoos in major cities, zoos are sad creations.

I like the conservation aspect of zoos. Imo, they are a necessity
Posted on 3/30/17 at 2:15 pm to skullhawk
That would make sense. Renovating an existing zoo means working when the zoo is not in operation or working around the zoo so as not to interrupt the experience. That takes a lot more time and OT than blowing and going at a green field site. It's like the difference between building a new road and widening an existing one while keeping it open to traffic.

There is a ton or racial tension in BR. The zoo isn't moving. End of story.
Posted on 3/30/17 at 2:45 pm to Bmath
The crazy thing is that citizens in NBR don't even fricking go to the zoo. They don't even care that it's there. And nobody stops at the sketchiest gas station in Baton Rouge (on the right hand side before turning onto the road leading to the zoo) so it's not like they will lose business. It's just a power thing for Gravy.

It's fricking pathetic that these even have anything to do with each other.
The zoo should be able to move if they think it will be mutually beneficial to themselves and their patrons without worrying about being declared racist.

Yea, it's changed quite a bit. My first visit there was in 2005. When I moved back in 2015, the zoo looked completely different.

When I went a couple weeks ago they asked for my zip code. I proudly gave it to them without hesitation because I knew exactly why they're asking everyone.

They should, but they won't, and the main reason is b/c it would be racist to take it out of NBR, and put it next to the white college, or next to the white flight of Prairieville and the Santa Maria/LA Country Club whites.
Did you not hear our idiot mayor say she thinks the tram they are proposing between downtown and LSU, should also go all the way to Southern?
The Zoo should be by LSU, close to the river. The Casino could have a boat bring people there. It would be an attraction for football games, as well as baseball games, and you can get some free and/or cheap labor from LSU vet students.
What does it matter if it's far from the interstate? Audubon zoo isnt' near the interstate and that mfer is packed every weekend. That's another problem. People from Baton Rouge would rather drive an hour and a half to the Audubon zoo as opposed to 20 minutes to the baton rouge zoo, and they pay more than double to get in as well. If you're not going to make a zoo that will make your local residents stop going to New Orleans as often, then what's the point of having one at all?
Posted on 3/30/17 at 3:01 pm to LSUBoo
I agree, but define mutually beneficial because if BREC has 110 million dollars to spend I think We need to sink it into more important projects than a zoo.
And that's one of the issues I have with our form of govt.; we have CATS, BREC, COA, Library Board, and others on their own and there is no way to prioritize their activities so that tax dollars impact out biggest problems.
For instance, no one can take BREC money to build a mental hospital even though that's needed more than a zoo.

I didn't hear that... the only reason it should go all the way to Southern is for it to connect to the airport. Having the airport/downtown/LSU all connected wouldn't be a bad thing.

does anybody even go to southern besides the law school?
