The current zoo needs about 2 million in roundup to start...

It would be pointless for many in North BR to pay the same BREC Tax.

does south BR pay the same tax?

BREC is funded by a parish wide property tax.

If they invested money in the current zoo it would be a great zoo. Take half the money it will take to move it and invest in the current one and it would be fine.

The study BREC paid for says otherwise. The additional money spent on relocating the zoo is offset by increased attendance and donations. They could also greatly downsize at a new site which should help with maintenance costs.

The location is what is hurting the zoo. BREC did give up on it hoping they could move it but it was on the decline well before then. BREC has a large surplus of money at the moment. The opponents of moving the zoo don't argue the facts at all. They just scream racism.

I'd imagine BREC would have to do something with that land to sell the locals politicians. Maybe a prison? I don't know. Let them hash it out.

How does a public entity call something a "bad location."

It obviously is a bad location, but how do they phrase it?

"it's a bad location."

Why is it a bad location?"

"Because, uh uh uh, it just is."

Is that a surprise? These studies always get the desired outcome.

To some extent, but by letting it fall into disrepair and by not keeping it up has to hurt. My DIL, just took my grandkids to NO because after several trips to our zoo she wasn't happy.

Yet the let the zoo fall into decline, and they haven't kept up City Park Lake at all. They have a large, dedicated tax stream yet they have demonstrated that they do not keep up their properties.

And I don't see this as a black and white issue; I see it as BREC either being a good steward of our money or they are not.

I use to be on BREC properties a lot. Golf and baseball primarily and a little tennis and basketball. Never did I think BREC took care of what they had. Their baseball diamonds are terrible and that's one reason all these private leagues started. The golf courses like Webb, City Dumas, and Howell all declined.

I have little confidence from BREC from past experience. Recent experiences at the Soccer Complex on Burbank was good. Those fields are very good, but only because the soccer association carries weight out there.

Zoo's make a lot of their revenues from weddings, parties, and corporate events. Nobody wants to attend any of these things in scotlandville.

The zoo needs to be relocated to the Nicholson area.

I agree but I think moving the zoo is the best idea they've had in a very long time. It's close to useless where it is right now.

If its not going to move, I'd rather them just close it down and use the money to enhance and maintain what they have than keep it open to languish.

if they want to keep it there that's fine, they do have the land and space, but they have to make it a destination, at least on par with the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans which is where most go

Gravy and MM would lose their shite.

It would make the Alton Sterling incident look like an inconvenience traffic stop.

If they move it they need to do it right. I like the Houston zoo and the exhibits.

it needs to be moved, but will be super expensive. it is just vastly underutilized up there in Baker, and I'm from Baker. It would get a gazillion more visitors in South BR, but is it worth spending $26 million to build it down there?

Plus North BR is always screaming about never building anything in their area, so politically, it's probably a no-go. Sad.

BREC has a $96 million annual budget. Shouldn't be too difficult to set aside $26 million over a few years.

Somewhere close to I-10 or I-12. Maybe there is room at the Rural Life Museum or something. That would be a good location.

Only problem is, it makes too much sense.

Or that it would be in the middle of a wetland. I realize that can be said about much of S. LA, but moving a zoo to an area that regularly floods is a bad idea.
