One of my best friends my first couple of years in college. So charming. The ultimate charmer of men and women. I don't mean sexually, I mean like he really could make a person feel understood and cool and valued like no one else you'd ever met.

Then the lies slowly started to pop up. And eventually banging girls you liked. Finally, several of his mutual friends got together and compared notes, along with some people from his past. Turned out he was nothing BUT lies. I'm still not sure, over a decade later, who he really was or what elements of his story were fake and what were merely exaggerated, but he lied about everything - even common everyday stuff. Once he'd run through an entire group of friends at A&M, he left. Someone said he claimed he was going to Africa. No kidding.

Never heard from him again. There's a 0% chance he went to Africa. He'd just worn out his welcome where he was, been found out, and was moving on to con a new group of people. Kind of scary, really.

Did he have a reason for going there?

Neither is a DSM diagnosis and the terms are essentially interchangeable. They are not synonymous with ASPD. The term "sociopath" is not used often in the literature these days. Psychopathy is the preferred term.

The easiest way of conceptualizing this is that psychopaths are the creme de la creme of ASPD. It's estimated that a small percentage of ASPD folks meet "criteria" (though, again, these don't exist in the DSM) for psychopathy.

My former boss/current office sales lead is absolutely a sociopath/psychopath

Every article ive ever read about it is downright eery in how accurate and thorough the description of this guy is.

Guy I went to middle school with. Got his jollies setting fires and torturing cats. Convicted of a particularly heinous rape in his early twenties and got sent away for life, which probably kept him from becoming a serial killer.

My mother-in-law. It isn't all her fault, though. I blame the Nazis.

Pretty sure one of my childhood "friends" is. Dude "found" a girls phone and wouldn't give it back till she blew him. Never hung out with him again after that. You've gotta have some shite wrong with you to do pull something like that.
