Wasn't he raving about funding to cure for diseases, cancer, and eliminate lots of FDA regulatory hurdles.

Now he is slashing Biomedical Research by 20%. Hopefully congress will block this

quote:

NIH research fuels the pipeline of discovery and innovation necessary to prevent, treat and cure our most vexing diseases and it has a significant economic impact, supporting more than 350,000 jobs across the United States and contributing some $60 billion annually in economic activity ….

quote:

Across NIH, because most of the agency’s budget goes to annual payments for ongoing grants, a nearly 20% cut could leave virtually no funding for new awards in fiscal year 2018, Hudson says. “The nation would lose research and researchers in a way that would not be recoverable,” Hudson says. “It is pretty terrifying.”

Fear mongering.

I suspect that the 20% will be lowered. Start high and meet in the middle.

You think a 20% cut in federal funding means we won't have research?

I love it how every government agency that has seen the threats of cuts comes out proclaiming that they are this huge producer for our economy. I'm pretty sure if they were all telling the truth then our country wouldn't be $20T in the hole right?

I have a well-meaning friend who is a Registered Nurse. My wife and I adore her, but we don't see eye-to-eye, politically. She just posted on FB about these cuts:
quote:

This is devastating. I wish people could understand that our national security and the well-being of our nation is so very much more than borders and immigrants.

I don't quite think she gets it.

Agree.
The CDC OTOH could stand a little scrutiny.

If you actually watched the presser on the budget you would know this is a cut to eliminate waste. Mulkavey used the example of in one city, might've been D.C. even, there are 7 different buildings owned and operated by the NIH with overlapping, duplicated, functions. Eliminate 3 of the locations by consolidating and save almost the entire 20% right there.

Funny you don't realize that there's easily 20% waste in all govt bureaucracies.

Where does it say the 20% come off of research? Trim the fat.

Belt tightening is something all federal agencies should get used to. It's not terrifying it's reality.

Do you think the nih doesn't waste at least 20% of their budget? It's probably higher. Stop being a hysterical little snowflake bitch.

If you would just be honest when you post a thread maybe, just maybe, other posters might have more respect for you.

Your own link says it is an 18% cut, not 20%, and the cut is for all of NIH funding, not just biomedical research funding.

As your own links explains much of the reduced funding is from consolidating the 27 (27!!!!) locations and institutes of the NIH and by reducing the funding for training people FROM OTHER COUNTRIES (!!!!) on how to do research. So research is not being cut on that part, just teaching citizens of other countries HOW TO DO RESEARCH.

Why can't those countries PAY the NIH for the training their people are receiving?
quote:

The Trump administration is not the first to propose an NIH reorganization—in the late 1990s, former NIH Director Harold Varmus decried its sprawling array of disease-oriented institutes and called for a more streamlined structure.
Try being truthful for a change.
