Thanks Rapoport. Solid pickup; I approve.

Write up from PFT a few weeks ago:
quote:
Panthers linebacker A.J. Klein has played pretty well when he’s been given a chance.
But on a team with three first-round picks at the position, and in a league when playing nickel defense is more prevalent with every passing year, there aren’t but so many chances.
So it’s probably not a surprise that Klein is looking for another address when free agency begins on March 9.
Via Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer, Klein said during an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he’d probably be looking for a new team.
The 2013 fifth-rounder started the final six games for the Panthers last year when Kuechly was out with a concussion, and played well. But the Panthers also have some guy named Thomas Davis who has been to a few Pro Bowls and are trying to figure out how to work 2015 first-round linebacker Shaq Thompson in more, so there are limited snaps for a fourth linebacker.
Klein’s a starting-caliber player and good against the run, and should have plenty of opportunities for the playing time he’s looking for, just not in Charlotte.

I also assume that this is a pretty friendly deal and not some ridiculous overpay, since its a guy looking for a chance to start.
I like it. Solid move.

Good pickup.
Per rotoworld...
Impending free agent LB A.J. Klein told SiriusXM NFL Radio he is looking for a starting job.
The comment all but rules out a return to the Panthers, who are set with Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, and Shaq Thompson. Klein has played an important role as an injury replacement the last couple seasons, however. Considering Davis' age and Kuechly's concussion history, the Panthers will need to replace Klein. The 25-year-old should be given a chance to compete for a starting job with several linebacker-needy teams in the market.

It's not a sexy move but it gives us more options at that spot now

I also don't think this precludes us from going LB in the draft, but it is definitely a move to just get solid at the position.

Does he play MLB?

I know it's not the end all, but PFF has him rated poorly. 52 ranked FA LB's and he's 42nd.

i member watching the Panthers late in the season and being impressed with him

Yes. PFF rated him the no.75 ILB but since he's young and if we got him kinda cheap then I'm good with it.

Scott Shanle's younger cousin right?
Just need a trashy barbed wire tattoo on his arm.

This is pretty good depth and scheme free agency magic. Ginn is Devery 2.0.
