re: Your mind will wrap itself in knots if you ponder the term 'African American'

I know a white guy who was born and raised in South Africa and when he moved to the US as a teenager and then applied for colleges, he was told he couldn't put "African" or "African American" on his applications because he was the wrong color.
It would be comical if it weren't so insane. Liberalism is a mental illness.

But your example is not insane, since we all know the meaning, even if it's terribly flawed. Just like I'm technically a Native American, but I know that is not what the mean when the ask what my race is.

First off I'd like to say that I'm flattered that you take up so much of your time thinking about us.
Then what will really put your mind in knots is how so many self-proclaimed non-racists take issue with "African American". There are at least a dozen of these posts started every year just at TD. Yet not one of these people have ever started a post and had a similar issue with "Asian American". Maybe you and your kind (that start and respond to these posts) just spend more of your time thinking about us. Again, I'm flattered from the attention.

Blacks are STILL enduring oppression in the mother land they claim to be so proud of that they went thru here 200 years ago. And it's at the hands of other blacks.
Is that racially based or tribal/class based ?

You should be embarrassed that this confuses you.

Well, I can't now that you said yes. Wait, yes I can.

His name was "roadgator's mom." Dropped two digits.

All the hyphenated terms are stupid, including 'European American.'
Asian American might have the best case though because we don't call them 'yellows'.
Indian Americans are different from American Indians, or are they?

I've explained all of this but you just wanna call it dumb I guess.

I'm not so sure about that. 100 years ago Irish immigrants were called Irish, not Irish-Americans. Or they were called worse. It's one reason European immigrants from that era tried to assimilate ASAP. There was quite a bit of bigotry aimed at immigrants. The sooner one assimilated, the better it was for that person
That says more about the bigoted Americans at that time than it does the immigrants.
Hmmm...eerily similar

I haven't read all the posts

Yeah I can't say what I call them.

Meh. You messed up the original joke anyway. Damn it.
Posted on 3/3/17 at 2:48 pm to weagle99
Where I grew up it was very common for people to refer to themselves as Irish American, polish American, etc. Once during school kids were all saying what they "were" for some reason. It may have been part of the class but everybody was asking everybody else. Whatever. This was prior to African American being popular. What I remember is a white girl asking me what I was and then stopping saying "Oh wait. You're not anything you're just black". I knew that she didn't mean it like it sounded but it stung. So I kinda like the term African American.

Easy, my man. James Baldwin said it best. "White Americans needs to ask themselves why they need to have the n***** in the first place." It's their invention. Blacks are men first. The obsession with race (their invention) is at times mind-boggling and worrisome. Why must t exist?
You cannot ask those that didn't not set these terms to ride the world of these terms.
