Congestive heart failure. Has gone from 90lbs of muscle to 50lbs of skin and bones. Doesmt want to eat, eating whole eggs, liver, and blocks of cream cheese daily to try to keep his strength up.

All other dogs, when it has been time, I've taken them out back and put them down myself. No scary vet's office. Just a last pet and they are gone.

With this one, I've had him for 9 years. I got him at 5 weeks old. He's been to 40 plus states with me. Slept at the foot of the bed every night he didn't manage to sneak into bed.

Know what needs to happen and can't do it.

Vet gave him a week a month ago.

With the heart pills, it really isn't anything he couldn't recover from if he would just eat. But old guy seems to have given up.

i'm like this with my Blue Heeler. I don't know how i'm going to do it bro.

Sorry man.

The Last Battle.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Man that's tough. Unfortunately I know how you feel. We are going through the same thing with our 11 year old english bulldog. He will only eat cooked food from your hand now. With the heart failure he passes out mid walk about once a day now. Vet says one day he will pass out and not wake up. With his condition it could be months or days. My wife will be broken when it happens. He's slept next to her for 11 years.

That's rough. We had to put my wife's dog down last year. I didn't even really like the dog much and it still tore me up pretty good. I'm hoping my Doberman just dies suddenly in his sleep when he gets old. I don't think I can take it.

At this point, when you are a pet owner, it is time to stop thinking about yourself and put the pet first. Please be kind and take him to the vet for a humane death to alleviate his suffering. He deserves this.

Anyone who has had dogs knows this day will come, and each time it sucks badly. I feel for you.

He has given you his complete love, trust, affection and devotion. He has earned your respect and you should do the right thing, let him go and put him to sleep ethically thru a vet.

My 16 yr best friend had failing back hips and all was good till I woke up and he had owed all over himself, no longer to be able to get up unassisted to go out. I OWED it to him to let him go. I was being selfish.

It's as hard as things can get. But I loved him more than my selfish reasons for letting him suffer.

Godspeed

Sorry to hear. We have a boxer that's only been around 8 yrs and is starting to have pain when he gets up in morning and I dread the day. He's for the S/O but comes to my side of the bed during the night when he needs to go outside or sometimes when he can't sleep and just wants to visit.

I had to put my sheppard mix dog down 11 months ago because of kidney failure. Tough couple of days before i finally brought him in. I didnt realize how bad it was. Wish i had done it sooner. That dog was smart as could be. I still have an english bulldog but he's dumb as a brick. No more pure breds after this. They say you only get one good dog in your lifetime i may have lost him already.

Tough situation. Our lab had cancer, and was treated for it, but the vet said that one day she will stop eating, and that would be the last thing.

Came home one day, she didn't get up to greet me, and wouldn't eat anything I tried to give her including a hamburger. Took her to the vet, and we ended up putting her down that night. There was nothing left to do at that point. I let the vet do it though, while I held her.

Props to you for this.
Old School train of thought there.
Some here would vilify you for this, no doubt.
Just seems like it's better by my hand, than a stranger.

My heart goes out to you hoss.
Be strong, when the time comes. You will know.

I read this as "My bullFROG has stopped eating"

But in all seriousness, this is one of the hardest things we do. Dog's are the best companions. Unconditional love no matter what. Every time I think about it, I think back on "The Last Battle" poem that meauxjeaux posted and it gives me some inner peace.

Hold him close as he passes peacefully. Make sure his last memory is you giving him some love. Good luck man

you can always put him on a feeder tube perhaps bring him back that way. I once had an old crow dog that could retrieve with the best of them. well he ended up getting the herps. wouldnt eat, drink or hunt. ole friend of mine is a vet and we put him on a feeding tube for 8 days and he was good as new until he got picked up from a hawk in the back 40. miss that damn pup

Unfortunately he has taken a pretty bad turn for the worse today while I was at work. He can no longer get up on his own.

I suppose it will have to happen in the morning. I don't want to bring him to LSU tonight as it would likely scare him. I'll get everything ready in the morning, dig the hole, tell him goodbye, and I guess end it.

Dang this entire thread has gotten me emotional. I've had a dog die when I was a kid by being hit by a vehicle, but never of old age. Now my wife and I have 2, and I couldn't imagine them not sleeping with us

And sorry to hear about this. Just know he lived a good life, and Im sure you gave him a happy home to live in throughout his life

The only bad thing about having a dog as a pet is the fact that they don't live forever

Condolences
